what about disabling sigs...

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

what about disabling sigs...

Postby alexboom on Wed Jul 30, 2003 10:00 pm

well once again, i came back here to complain about big sigs :P

it's coming very tiring to browse through the forum, with people posting 1 line coming with a signature that is 4 times higher than the post itself... and there are a lot of people doing it, i think that an image that is 150 pixels high is already too tall, even in 1024x768

most of the sigs are useless and are uninteresting. i'm enough of seeing so many times "kidd for mvp" with photos that brings nothing.
at least, the only time i saw one funny was the one with "[img]c:\my%20documents\nba%20live%202003\image.jpg[/img]" hehe i know it wasn't done on purpose but that was fun :P

and i know that you, andrew and yohance, cannot be after everyone. look at jason kidd, after warning him 3 or 4 times, he still doesn't understand that his sig is too big.

I know that's possible with phpbb2 to disable sigs, as it seems that users will never be sober, it can be useful to delete the option, even if some people may not be very happy.

that's obvious that i like very much this forum thanks to the work of andrew and yohance, but i don't wanna see my little pleasure wasted by a forum that has to be browsed like we cross the jungle :)

I dont know what andrew thinks yet but i believe in freedom of expression.(y) If he can somehow put in the ability for a user to disable sigs via his profile...that would be great. Disabling sigs alltogether seems a bit extreme...although it may be what other message boards see as feasible. Mabe some sort of poll about it would be good also.

You could also make rules about signatures and enforce them.

I don't really want to disable signatures, since that isn't fair for people who do not have large images in their posts.

There's no way of placing restrictions on signatures other than disabling them, so I guess the best I could do would be to set rules on the size of images used in signatures.

Like Yohance, I believe there needs to be some discussion before I take any action. There are a few questions I'd like forum members to consider:

Do you want images in signatures?

If so...

What would be a suitable maximum size for images?
Should the number of images be restricted to one?
Should animated GIFs be allowed?

well, after a short night of sleep, i finally admit that disabling signatures would make the forum a bit sad :) but i still reckoin that rules shall be placed and enforced, as rens said.

here's my point of view :
i'm ok for animated gifs, no more than 200 ko though (for slower connections, and 200 ko is already big)
only one image per signature
max image size : 600 x 160

people who don't respect the rules shall be warned, after 3 days he shall be automatically disabled his sig option.

if you ask me...

What would be a suitable maximum size for images?
height should be limited to... say, 70 pixels

Should the number of images be restricted to one?
definately yes.

Should animated GIFs be allowed?
definately no. kills 56k connection.

just my 2 cents...

Yes, there are. There's plenty of ways. You could disable image tags only. You could lower the character count. You could set up rules on them and disable the signature abilities of those who violate.

What I meant was there is no means of placing an automatic restriction upon the size as you can with avatars.

I don't mind about size at all. as long as its not wide enough to have to scroll, and as long as the file size isn't outragous.
Should the number of images be restricted to one?

Yes.
Should animated GIFs be allowed?

No.

You could have it check image sizes like the remote avatar checker does I suppose.

I change my mind on that one, i think they should be allowed, but only if they're by themselves with no other images. (Y)
