Do you like sequels?

Postby Andrew on Mon Jul 28, 2003 1:24 pm

Seems that in the eyes of critics, sequels can be good but are never as good as the first movie. Books don't usually suffer the same assessment, but the second movie rarely rates as good as the first - yet the public seems to enjoy it all the same.

I thought American Pie 2 was better than the original, though perhaps that's because I'd seen the first so many times by time I saw AP2 it just seemed better since it was fresh. I also thought Men in Black II was better than the original. And I definitely thought Maxtrix: Reloaded was better than the original.

So does anyone else disagree with the critics when it comes to sequels?

I think its cos ppl bring high expectations into see the sequels, they expect it will be a lot better than the 1st one, and when those expectations aren't met, they think its worse than the first one, but as a matter of fact, its only worse than wht they expected it to be.
hey, thts jst like the nba live series

To be fair, there has been some kind of improvement in every NBA Live game, be it graphics or gameplay. And a sequel to a popular video game can easily include improvements such as new character abilities, better graphics and whatnot, whereas it's much more difficult to make a sequel to a movie that is as compelling and entertaining as the original.

Maybe that's why we have prequels. Maybe it's easier to go back and flesh out the characters in a setting before the original movie, rather than move forward in the story.

Prequels usually just screw up the originals imo... just look at what George Lucas did with StarWars... no more magic those great movies used to have... now it's just about selling licenced merchandise...
and another prequel, made for reasons to me utterly uknown... dumb and dumberer... never seen a dumberer movie till that one, simply idiotic, unfunny, pointless...

as for the sequels, well, usually they're made to milk the cash... you've seen it this year with charlie's angels 2, 2 fast 2 furious... etc, didn't really surpass the originals in quality, they infact sucked pretty much, but the producers got what their goal was - cash - and probably will make even more sequels... sadly.

sequels that surpassed the original... off the top of my head...
Terminator 2
Aliens
Empire strikes back
Godfather Part 2
...
X2 (10 times better than the first)
Bad Boys II
Reloaded (more or less)

who isn't looking for money these days?
scams, over exploitment of natural resources, drugs, everyone is just trying to make money
Next thing you know, they're gonna make a three 1 hour titanic movies, with to be continued at the end of the first 2.
well, back to the topic.
I guess the Matrix Reloaded was pretty good, better than the first one.
imo, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was way better than the Fellowship of the Ring
Prequels are OK sometimes, when they fill in gaps in the original.

Well it's actually all one book, so I don't consider The Two Towers a sequel. It's a trilogy that can't be seperated IMO.

Yea i agree with that...Bad Boys II is a little better even. I thought it would suck but it brought enough freshness to the series to keep me happy.

X2 was far better than the original

I think Godfather part 1 was the best of all 3...it only got progessively worse after that.

T3 was a step back from part 2 but still a little better than part 1.

Martrix Reloaded was way better than part 1.

American Pie II was basically a clone of the original..so while i chuckled a bit..i didn't really like it. Also, American Wedding just looks plain silly...im not gonna waste my eye juice watching that. The original movie is one of my favourate movies of all time though.

... Sequels are generally movies that feed off the original and dont come with anything fresh. They use the same formula of the popular movie instead of inventing fresh stuff and thats why they generally suck. I'd say more than 50% of sequels and prequels suck.

I think sequels and prequels are generally worst than the previous movies because people have something they can compare to... If you watch Terminator 1, then watch the 2nd and the 3rd, you can compare them... And generally the 1st movie comes out on top, being the better and all...

I say I don't like prequels and sequels... Most of the time I watch those movies, heck, I make the producers earn money... But I still think it'd be more interesting if some new stories could be thrown around, rather than recycling old stories, like the "Silence of The Lambs", dunno if this is the exact name in English... It's that movie that starred Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster... The first one was very good, winning Oscars and all... The other two... Heck, not worth the price of the ticket IMO.

Others movies can have sequels/prequels and still, they come out as nice, like the Godfather series... All 3 movies are good IMO... Of course the 1st one is the best.

Just my 0.000000000000002 cents...

I agree, not all sequels are good. But I think a lot of sequels get written off as being bad simply because they are sequels.

I think they might be pushing it with American Wedding, but I'll no doubt end up seeing it. Surely they will be finished with that story after the third movie; I'm surprised they'd even have enough ideas for number three in the first place.

T2 and T3 are great sequels
T3 explains a lot of things but w/o James cameron directing it has some pointless bits.......but still a great movie
