PS3 Game Region Differences On SDTV?

Postby TomCat on Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:54 pm

Ok so I've been looking around everywhere on tons of forums which discuss this issue and I still haven't got an answer which can reassure me about this.

So...
I own a PAL PS3 and play on a PAL SDTV. I want to import Modern Warfare 2 from the U.S because I know that PS3 games are region free. Now the issue is, apparently some games have a problem with compatibility when played on an SDTV from a different region because of their different resolutions. However some say that there is no problem with a PAL SDTV playing NTSC games on a PAL PS3 but only for those wanting to play PAL games on NTSC PS3. I'd like to believe this because PAL SD resolution is 576i, whereas the NTSC SDTV resolution is 480i. So that means that there would be no problem playing NTSC games because PAL tv's should be able to lower their resolution to 480i to play them. PAL on an NTSC tv would be a problem though because the resolution would have to be higher than the tv can handle. Am I right or talking absolute shit?

Any help would be appreciated because my Sister who lives in the U.S wants to get me Modern Warfare for christmas but doesn't want to risk sending it to me if it's not going to work..

My guess is that any PAL TV capable of NTSC playback - which should be most of them these days - shouldn't have any issues.

How do you know if your TV is capable of NTSC playback?

It should say so in the manual. If you don't have that handy, Google the model and you should either find an copy of the manual in pdf format or at least a rundown of the specs and so forth which should mention whether or not it has NTSC playbook. I believe most TVs made from 2000 onwards are NTSC compatible though.

I have NTSC College Hoops 2k7 & 2k8 & use to have NTSC NBA 2k8. I have absolutely no problems running them on my 3 & a half year old LCD TV on my PAL PS3.

I can't find the manual or specs for my Television anywhere online. I looked on the back where the serial code is and it also said that it runs in 50/60Hz .. Is that an indication of anything?

EDIT: I found my model..

SONY TRINITRON TV KVT25SF1
59CM A/V STEREO
* Colour System:PAL, PAL 60, NTSC 4.43, NTSC 3.58 (AV in).

That means I'm good then doesn't it?

Sounds like it. I think X's experiences confirm you should be OK as well.

I wouldn't get a lot of games. Just try it out with one first. I know when I first imported College Hoops 2k7 that I was really paranoid that it wouldn't work or would just play in black & white, but was relieved when it did. You should be fine. Good luck.
