Sports Illustrated: "From Heroes to Villains"

Postby Andrew on Fri Aug 21, 2009 8:44 pm

Article at Sports Illustrated

Saw this posted on a wrestling news site since Hulk Hogan comes in at #9, though admittedly he stands out from the other individuals on the list given his profession. Culturally speaking, I'd say it's worth a mention.

I'm not too surprised at #1. I don't follow the NFL but I've certainly heard about what happened with the Cleveland Browns and Drew Carey pretty much dedicated a chapter to it in his book. At first I thought Clay Bennett should've been on the list, but while he certainly qualifies as a sports "villain" he doesn't really fit the "from hero" part.

if you include pro wrestlers im sure there could be about a 90 page list of these...Very surprised by hogan's presence. Then again that was one of the saddest days of my life...

True, but given Hogan's status in the industry and his run as an "All-American hero" for the decade leading up to that turn, it's perhaps the most significant hero to villain story in professional wrestling. If they were going to include just one pro wrestler in that list, he'd be the one.

Yeah no question. I expect we'll be seeing a few columns expressing those sentiments within the next 24 hours.

Now I'd want to see Miami at Cleveland this season.
