Met any celebrities lately?

Postby Cameron on Wed Aug 19, 2009 1:53 pm

Hey guys,

Since I've moved to Toronto for university (for the last two years), I've had opportunity to meet some famous faces. Especially because for whatever reason, a lot of movie and TV shows like to film at my residence. For example: a scene in Harold and Kumar was filmed there, parts of the Fringe series premiere were filmed there, a TON of the second Hulk movie was filmed there, apparently some of Good Will Hunting... the list goes on. I thought it would be fun to discuss the famous people that everyone has met, and share the stories around them. I have a few good ones, I think.

The first time I went to a Raptors game, I met Chuck Swirsky, who at the time was the play by play voice. The second time I went, it was the season opener, and I got my picture with Bryan Colangelo (I hope you've heard of him). He is really tall, and treated me like an old friend: "How's it been going, buddy? How you been doing?" I told him I'd just finished a midterm (which I had. Physical chemistry).

I chatted with Rick Mercer (a Canadian celebrity, you may not have heard of him). It was after a filming of his show I attended. We got confused and ended up last in the line to meet him, which meant we got to spend extra time with him.

One night I was studying in my res's common room. It was about midnight, and the subject was organic chemistry (ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh). I see someone coming up the stairs, I thought it was a fellow resident. It wasn't. It was Joshua Jackson (Pacey from Dawson's creek, now a star in The Fringe). He said "Do you know where I could find an accessible washroom?" Well, me and my friend (who is a medical student, and I am a pharmacy student) both had the same medical thought - why does Joshua Jackson need a (handicap) accessible washroom? But he just meant one that... he could access. Now this story got funnier, because my friend and I both kind of stared at him, more out of confusion than anything... but it was March, which meant I was participating in a moustache march (can't shave your moustache for the month). But I can't grow a moustache, so I just looked like an angry pedophile. Joshua Jackson saw this and kind of went "Sorry if I"m not supposed to be in here..." but then the girl with us jumped up and took him into the residence. He did his business in a dirty washroom on the third floor. The worst part was that we had been goofing around with cameras earlier and they were sitting on the table, but no one thought to ask for a picture. If only he hadn't said "Accessible" ! (I did miserable on that exam, btw. My worst mark of the year. I blame Pacey).

We spied on Richard Gere and Hilary Swank out our windows once, but security guards kept shooing us away.

We almost got to meet Colm Feore (another Canadian actor... played the President's husband in 24 this past season). But then missed him.

I walked across the set of Being Erika (a Canadian show) with my underwear over my pants. It was a charity thing for class. It was slightly embarrassing. The director asked if I had lost a bet.

Now, the last story, and my favourite: one day I had blown off physiology, and was working on an assignment in my friend's room. He happened to have the day off too. So I was on my laptop, and got bored and decided to surf the web a bit. I had recently found out that on "twitter" you could "follow" celebrities, and about two days before had started following some Star Trek: The Next Generation actors on there. (total coincidence). So, I decided to read recent tweets. I went to LeVar Burton's page (he played Geordi, the guy with the visor. He also hosted The Reading Rainbow) and saw his most recent tweet said that he was going to be at this bar in Toronto in about 1 hr. I asked my friend if that bar was close... he said it is about a 15 minute walk. I said, do you want to go meet LeVar Burton? We decided to take a chance on him actually showing, the twitter thing being real, etc etc. We had NO idea what to expect. So we get there, and there are some other people hovering around the place (and this is in the middle of Canadian winter, so it ain't warm) and we somehow got talking with them, and found they were there for LeVar too. So we all ended up upstairs... and after a little while, LeVar walked in. I was on the outside, and the first person he said hello to. Then more people came and we all had beer on the upstairs patio. TV and newspaper were there too; we were on the local tv news (my friend more than me though) AND I got quoted in the Globe and Mail (a national newspaper). I actually got a whole little paragraph to myself in the article. It's online, if anyone's interested. That was so much fun... having beer with Geordi from Star Trek.

Well, I hope you enjoyed my stories. I sure had fun living them... and that was only over about a 16 month period. Can't wait to see what happens this year!

Please share your stories as well :)

Went to NYC with a friend for the Rainstone Live concert featuring Epik High, MYK, Kero One, and Far East Movement. After the concert my friend and I were just wandering around Koreatown and as we headed towards this one restaurant for dinner, we spotted a couple dudes standing outside the Hilton next door. Turns out to be several of the artists we went to see (MYK, DJ Dumbfounded, and Beatbox DG). We ended up chatting a bit before they were mobbed by other fans, and got a picture in with them before headed to dinner. Pretty much the perfect ending to a great day and concert.

Needless to see there's no one famous in my current area. I used to see quite a few celebs when I was living in Hollywood though. Ben Stiller was shooting a scene right in front of my house, a couple of series were being shot in the area too. And plenty of famous musicians around the Roxy and the surrounding bars, well, famous for me at least...

Sacha Baron Cohen was filming Borat the day i was in LA. Didnt get to meet him though.

As far as actual celebrities...Do athletes count? If so the entire carolina Panthers football team (training camp is in my hometown), Darius Rucker (of Hootie and the Blowfish fame), Kyle Petty (NASCAR announcer/former driver), Richard Petty (All time NASCAR win leader), and Kurt Busch (NASCAR driver)...

the worst part? I HATE NASCAR lol

I just met Wyatt Cenac at the Bumbershoot music festival. Who wants to touch me? (I also came within 100 yards of both Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand)

I think Jing killed the "celebrities" part of this thread with his random Asian rappers, that guy's been on TV at least.

I've never really met anyone famous that I can remember... my mum met Tony Lockett (Australians will know who he is) in a bar in Sydney when I was like 7 (making her about 31) ... he hit on her, she didn't know who he was (not a sports fan) and he then got so angry that she thought he was going to punch her. It's a bit strange but the people she was with at the time have all told the story multiple times over the years.

His nickname is "Plugger"... probably a good thing she rejected him in hindsight.

Oh, I don't watch that crap enough to know the new correspondents names. It oddly seems like the best way to a big career however. (If you aren't female.)

And re:thisthread I don't go to the casino anymore, so I can't list the "people staying after/before their show who I see wandering about bored because they're in the middle of nowhere."

I've heard the exact same sort of story about Dermott Brereton (again, Australians will know who he is). He came onto a friend of my mum's, who rejected him having not known who he was. Aussie Rules footballers have a strange sense of poontang entitlement.

How did I "kill" it? Are they not celebrities in their own country and culture just Tony Lockett (whom you claim Australians will know) is a celebrity in Australia, though he most likely won't be know to most outside of his sport and country.

Met Novak Djokovic once when I was travelling back from Serbia to Australia, he was sitting in the seat right behind me and was going to Dubai for a holiday with his misses and God damn she is beautiful. Talked alot with him during the flight, he was very nice and down to earth and even, when we landed in Dubai to change flights, came up to us to say goodbye. Very good guy glad I had the chance to meet him.

Btw, heres a pic of his misses. :P

Its cool that you saw him, but did you meet him? I've seen Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, Gary Payton and others around town, but I didn't meet them.

I got to have the shortest chat (but a chat none the less) with the girl of my dreams, Jessica Alba, when she came down to Southland Shopping Center (Melbourne) for Fantastic Four 2 a couple years ago and also got her to sign my copy of FHM of which she was on the cover. She was absolutely gorgeous, gracious and friendly (pretty sure this single experience has lead to my current higher standards).

Most recently I got dragged into queing for 4 hours (along with 2 hour trip getting there) to see the "Glee" cast by a friend. At that point I had no clue what Glee was or who infact they were, but she insisted that it would be "fun". Never the less i was surrounded by 15yr olds SCREAMING their lungs out and my friend no longer acting her age. I ended the day getting everyones signature on a single CD soundtrack and a quick chat with each actor. It wasnt till later I actually saw ads for the show (of which i actually now watch and enjoy... besides the whole tackling 'teen issues' part of it, its actually a decent watch (Y) ).

Bands totally don't count. Who gives a shit about being 100metres from a band? Seeing them live if you're 100m from them you're not even in the same fucking building!
