Postby Herkus Mantas77 on Sun Aug 16, 2009 7:30 am

Thats the problem: since last couple of weeks I can't watch some DVDs on my laptop which I've had been watching weeks ago,e.g. 'Dr.No' , and a lot more. The laptop is of LIFE (Medion) and the driver for the harddrive is good....the lense seems to be ok to, because copied dvds i can watch and other medias like cd-roms and cds and so on too.....so please guys, do you have any ideas?????

What exactly happens when you try to play them (and can't)? For example, do you get any error messages?

Honestly, I think your best bet would be to look in some tech forums or simply Google the problem with what info you have (can't play DVDs, the laptop model) as it will probably bring up some discussion threads elsewhere that have been started by people experiencing similar problems. It may be a common fault with your laptop model in which case there'll hopefully be a readily available solution.

Go to the computer fixer if you can't find the solution on your own.

Your dvd's aren't on the hard drive. They are on the actual dvd, so you need to open the dvd drive.

What dvd software are you using to view them?
Have you tried updating your drives firmware?
How often do you use the drive to watch dvd's? It's possible that it is just starting to fail after frequent use.

You probably need to see if an updated firmware exists for the specific DVD drive that you have in that laptop. If unsure, check the "device manager", write down the exact name of your DVD drive and download any new firmware that exists for it on the manufacturer's website. Also googling the issue with the name of your DVD drive should help, if you haven't tried that already.

EDIT: by any chance, have you recently uninstalled iTunes on that laptop? There is known bug that sometimes results in having your DVD drive not being recognized anymore when you uninstall iTunes. I had it a few years ago and it was an easy fix when googling it.

Try the software called Media Player Classic http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/. In my experience, it's the best DVD software out there, especially because it's free. If it doesn't work, it might be hardware related, or you maybe accidentally changed your region code (I know this can happen on a Mac).

Did you try Media Player Classic then? Seriously, it's so amazing for DVDs.
