We can't afford to do nothing. If dangerous media isn't stopped now, the deaths will be on the hands of all those who did nothing to stop them.
We don't allow cigarette ads on TV, and we put weak warnings describing potential effects of smoking. Why don't we label video games, and violent movies the same way? "THIS GAME MAY TURN YOUR CHILD INTO A MURDERER!" It's obvious that media causes people to do things, that's why we banned Joe Camel, that's why we have broadcasting standards.
The problem is, it doesn't go far enough, and doesn't cover broad enough. A law banning minors from buying violent video games. Excellent. But what's stopping them from getting from an older friend? Or seeing coverage of the game on the internet? Or television? The hateful dangerous ideas can still seep into them.
If people weren't aware of these things, they wouldn't even think about doing the terrible acts.
It's like fast food. If we didn't allow them to
advertise, and only allowed reports on how dangerous it is, millions of lives would be saved every year from obesity and heart disease. Instead we do nothing. Their blood is on our hands.
Porn is a good example, it causes people to treat women improperly and also teaches that rape is okay. There's also a lot of racism in it. Yet we have no problem with it, and some sinners are encouraging it. Even though a lot of it is unprotected, which just encourages more unprotected sex!
Heck, at least we tax
cigarettes and alcohol. We should tax all goods/media based on the amount of dangerous content within. (As decided by a fair and objective government council.) That way when someone is murdered due to the hateful ideology of Bill O'Reilly, this tax fund can pay out to the victims along with O'Reilly going to jail. (Along with his assets seized to help pay more.) Or when mass murders are simulating their rampage in a DOOM custom map, id will have already paid reparations for each sale of their game. (On top of them also going to jail and their assets seized.)
We hold Hitler accountable for the acts of the Holocaust even though it was just his ideas and influences. When children die trying to replicate wrestling moves, the least we can do is hold the WWE and the like accountable.
A lot of people go down the right path by wanting to get rid of dangerous tools like guns, cars, etc. It's time to get rid of dangerous ideas.
We no longer have the option to do nothing.
