New Monkey Island Games

First, a revamped version of the original:

Telltale Games are also releasing new episodic games, much like they did with Sam & Max:

It's been a long time coming. The remake looks pretty good too, especially the ability to switch back and forth between the original graphics and the revamped version.

Sounds like they're trying to cash in on nostalgia if you ask me.

Doesn't matter. I'll still buy it like the salivating dog that I am.

True, but then what game isn't trying to make money for the developers? It's nice to see old favourites get an update and be brought back into distribution, appealing to retro gamers without the need for DOSBox and emulation. I'm all for it.

I played the 1st episode's demo and it was alright, but not more memorable than that. I must say I never played the original one, but just like what they did with Wallace & Gromit, it's kind of a risky bet for Telltale Games. Aside from those who are nostalgic of the LucasArt games from the 90's, I don't really see the new Monkey Islands episodes becoming the next Sam & Max-style success story.

Perhaps, but I'd say there's a lot of people who have been waiting for the next saga in the series since the third game (or possibly the fourth, I can't remember which) had the Voodoo Lady make a tongue-in-cheek mention to having an "unbreakable five game contract with LucasArts". If the series does well enough, I think it could be a similar success to Sam & Max.

That said, the remake might have a better chance of success. Anyone who wants to play it again but has long since lost their disks might be inclined to pick it up as something of a collectible and trip down memory lane.

I downloaded the first episode of the new Tales of Monkey Island free courtesy of the offer for Talk Like A Pirate Day (thanks again to Ben for the heads up). So far I'm liking it although the interface is a little awkward (I'd rather point-and-click for movement rather than click-and-drag), but the humour of the original games is there.

Not sure how they managed to do that, but here's a little video of Monkey Island 2 "borrowing" the almighty CryEngine:

Pretty cool but geek that I am, I have to point out that Monkey Island 2 begins on Scabb Island, not Monkey Island itself, so the sign is out of place.

The whole first season will be available for $4.95 to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Reckon I might have to pick that up, I also ended up getting the remakes of the first two games not long back.

Definitely worth it if you're a fan of the originals. I found myself switching back to the classic version to complete some of the puzzles though.
