I understand that the games have a different approach to NBA Live and NBA 2K but for anyone who's played them, is there anything you'd say it does better than those two games?

Well with the Story Mode, Skills Challenges and weekly online challenges, there is more shit to do outside of the main modes, but that's about it.

1080p! A really nice TNT style display! The arenas don't look too bad, they look "realistically" sized in comparison with the players. (Something that is apparently harder to do than it seems based on how long it took Live to get anywhere near right.)

The "freestyle" equivalent is creative. Notice I didn't say better.

The offensive AI isn't completely abhorrent, it will take advantage of mistakes you make defensively. Defensive AI is non-existant though.

Still, it's not as good as Live. And I consider Live to be an ongoing piece of trash.

(Comments based on NBA 08 Demo for PS3.)

Apart from maybe the courts, Live 05 looks better than that POS.

Nope. And I don't plan on it until they're $150 or less. (And then they'll still need games to justify it. I still haven't see any must buy exclusives for PS3/360. At least the Wii has Mario Galaxy and Corruption, along with GameCube BC.)

If games like those are what make you want buy consoles then you might never end up with a ps3/360. Wouldn't playing a nba video game title be enough motivation for you to get a console in either case? Especially considering the pc market is abandoned by EA.

No basketball video game is worth $400, or even $150. And Live will be back next year for PC, so I can play a crappy basketball video game without needing a new console, if I feel the need to ever do so again.
If games like those are what make you want buy consoles then you might never end up with a ps3/360.

You mean actual good ones full of epicness? Not crappy ones proclaimed to be amazing like CoD4 or Frequency with Expensive Controllers?

And even that first one, like the consoles actual good titles (BioShock, ones in the Orange Box, GTAIV) all have superior PC versions. You can't get the Wii brilliance on PC.

Besides, there's still so many fantastic last gen games I haven't got around to digging into. Or would easily prefer to play again.

Whatever floats your boat...i'm by no means a console homer so i'm not defending them. I had to give in cause i'm a fan of action games like those featuring spiderman and hulk as well as the GTA series...and I need my perrenial nba game fixing. $400 is nothing if it means I get to play those games...that's much less than a week's paycheck.

I just got the Demo for NBA 09 and this game is underrated. Everything about it from the menus to the gameplay reminds me of the good days when it was more simple and fun like Live 2000 on PC. I hope the franchise mode is the same way but that is just me I guess. The commentary with Kevin Calabro is awesome! It has all his zany sayings just like in real life. The graphics are not as good as Live and 2K (but still good) but who cares? Probably not worth $60 but I think it will be a fun game.

Ya honestly not even that bad of a game. Just played the demo as well. Graphics while not being amazing, aren't bad. Better player movement than last years Live, and better crowd than Live has ever had. Commentary is good and gameplay isn't all that bad. Pretty fun but definitely not sim. Pretty terrible AI and shooting mechanics are just bad, but still arcadish and fun. The Life seems fun and overall not that bad of a game.

Yea demo wasn't bad. Figured I'd give it a shot, and the story mode wasn't bad, decent commentary. I actually kind of like the shooting mechanism where you have to get it in the green and stuff, but other than that, it was way too arcade-ish, AI, as volsey said was pretty bad. Meat of it all is still LIFE. Still #3 amongst the video games though.

Yeah I thought the commentary was one of the strong points even better than Live's. That might just be me though but hearing Marv is getting old. Also Harlan and Calabro are two of my favs and imo two of the best ever and most exciting ever. I will be getting this along side Live or 2K. Mostly for the career mode but I do hope it has more than just the stories. I hope you play out full games and stuff.

I for one thought it was horrible, I did a 360 dunk with kobe over garnett and pierce, and shooting 3's with that stupid bar ugh i really disliked this game.

The story mode in this game looks like it was done really well. You get to watch your created player come from street ball to the NBA. It almost makes me want to buy the game.
