Epic bad guys + "grey" characters.

Postby Jackal on Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:58 am

After watching Ledger's Joker, I realized I seem to like "grey" characters a whole lot. It's no surprise I get a total hard on from Tyler Durden and Patrick Bateman.

Figured I'd ask you guys who your favorite badasses are.

Here's a list of mine:

  • Ledger's Joker - The Dark Knight.
  • Tyler Durden - Fight Club.
  • Patrick Batman - American Psycho.
  • Alex De Large - A Clockwork Orange.
  • John Doe - Se7en.
  • Tony Montana - Scarface.
  • Dr. Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon.
  • R.P. McMurphy (sort of?) - One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
  • Anton Chigurh - No Country For Old Men.
  • Bill "The Butcher" - Gangs of New York.
  • Kaiser Soze - The Usual Suspects.
  • Stansfield - Leon (The Proffesional).
  • Travis Bickle - Taxi Driver.
  • Frank White - King of New York.
  • Mr. Blonde - Reservoir Dogs.
  • Nicky Santoro - Casino.
  • Derek Vinyard - American History X.
  • Alonzo - Training Day.
  • Costello - The Departed.
  • Li'l Ze - Cidade de Deus
  • The Jackal - The Jackal. (You know I had to add him.)
  • V - V for Vendetta.
  • Agent Smith - The Matrix.
Michael Corleone? Daniel Craig James Bond?

Italic means favorites.

Your thoughts?

It's Keyser Soze, you dumb bitch.
I don't really get the grey character thing, but from what I see in your list, it's about guys not entirely bad, but not good either, right?

I'd add Jules from Pulp Fiction and Slevin from Lucky Number Slevin if that's the case. If not, well, then I ain't addin' shit, foo' :mrt:

Wasn't going to add TV guys given I'm not much of a TV person. But...add:

Tyler Durden & Tony Montana are definitely at the top. Alonzo & V are good ones as well, but Michael Corleone sounds like a familiar badass, from which movie is he from? If you guys seen the movies Juice and Paid In Full, Tupac & Camron are some pretty good badasses, respectively, in those movies.

Holy shit  That list pretty much correlates to my top favorites too. The only other guy I'd add in is Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood.

Some movie called "The Godfather".

The only other guy I'd add in is Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood.

I thought that movie went on for too long, as good as he was, it went on too long for me.

How exactly is The Dark Knight's Joker "grey"? Or Soze and Stansfield for that matter.

Just wondering what the definition of "grey" being used here is...

Hmm, neither are grey indeed. Both are pretty badass though.

Yeah, I wasn't actually criticizing (as is commonly understood), but I was thinking of more people to add and looking at the posted lists to get the "frame of mind" and noticed that.

Sweeney Todd is quite a sinister character. I'd probably list him, though I had higher expectations for the movie. I'm not sure if it's because I can't enjoy musicals.

No, no, I didn't take it offensively. I figured some of them weren't "grey" hence the ? behind McMurphy. I just didn't know how else to word it at that moment.

I do believe you guys about him being sinister, he seemed that way from the trailers alone...

But sinister people shouldn't break out in to songs.

Uhm, Tony Soprano!

He isnt sinister at the start though...he is only sinister after he goes mad with revenge...

His song is creepy cool though. Plus his sinister level surely surpasses the barber. Right?
