Canadian Asians eh?

Postby [Q] on Thu Jun 05, 2008 7:41 pm

well, this was a topic brought up in the "get to know you thread" and I'm honestly interested in the topic. this thread could be a one-post wonder, but hey i don't really care.
http://www.nbaliveforums.com/viewtopic. ... ht=#914528

There seems to be a growing population or more precisely people coming out of the proverbial closet about being Canadian and Asian or of Asian descent. I know quite a number of you are in the same boat, or in similar situations in the US or Australia. people like Jing, its asdf, dragon@4q, Sam., kevC (Korean and not Asian lol) and now jt 55 and ckal come to mind. what are your experiences (if any) of negotiating a Chinese/Asian identity while trying to maintain a normal life in a "Western" civilization?

I think a lot of it has to do with whether you were born here (or immigrated at a young age) or immigrate at an older age (past 10 or so).
Also, it also has to do with where you live. You live around all white people, you tend to acculturate faster. (Acculturation meaning "the process of adopting the cultural traits or social patterns of another group.")

Here in the United States, I feel that although treatment of American Asians has gotten better, the place where it needs the most help is in the media. The only images they see of Asians are just that. Asians, not American Asians, forever foreigners on the screen, as the reluctant kung fu hero, computer nerd, scientist, or triad gang member. The only movie that I've seen that works to break down those stereotypes has been Harold & Kumar go to White Castle where two American Asians (Korean & Indian) are the main characters and the white guys are the "bad guys"

anybody's thoughts on the subject are welcome, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, and race.

How nice to see that word in a thread that hopes to open understanding on the treatment of race/ethnicity. Dumbass.

Asian stereotypes still exist here, as well as for any other ethnicity, but because Canada is very multicultural, there's a lot of people from different ethnicities so there's not really a ethnic struggle to assimilate. A lot of Asian culture and values does remain in their households, though, which is good.

At first, I thought this was a thread about Asian Canadian women.

Well... I don't think I can discuss myself, unless someone make a statement and then I will reply.

And to Kris, I suggest you use the "N" word only to yourself - anti-racism is very popular these days, and even I don't like being discriminated, which had already happened a few times in school, being bullied, or "bullied", with the quotation marks.

Happens everywhere, don't know the explanation. The Asians always get bullied for some reason, even here in Italy. We don't have the stereotypes, though, as most Asian guys don't live up to them (i.e. I've never seen an Asian nerd here in Italy, a part from a friend of mine from Sri Lanka, but he's not stereotypical, he's just really good at school. 60%+ of them actually have bad grades).

i just hate those niggas out there in the streets they are so noisy and i cant understand when im talking to them cuz they speak to fast (you know what i mean?)

Maybe it's not them that speak fast. Maybe the problem is just that you're slow.

You understand you just made a racist comment, don't you? And you're actually a victim of racism, too... :shake:

It's like those Mexican-Americans who didn't vote for Obama because he's black. Ridiculous.

So anti-racism will eventually lose its popularity and we all get to be racists again? Yey!

Filo-Mexican is a mix I've never heard before, nice to see odd combinations, you hapas. I've only known one other person that was half Mexican, and the other half was Korean.

Northeast Asians are pretty racist anyways.

Congratz on your 9001th post.

And the Koreans are the main problem (no offense, and I am not saying all of them), they stay in their own little groups and jabber in Korean. :?
We aren't boycotting you guys, you guys just won't join us. And probably what they have in mind is that we are racists...

Would you go try and talk to a group of gay-looking (sorry again, but that's my opinion) people who are jabbering in a language that you don't understand?

Don't forget I'm only 162 cm tall, back in the "Get to know you" thread.

Well, if all Asians born in Canada look like Kristin Kreuk, then I love them all... Hot damn....
I know she's also of Dutch descent, but one of her parents is of Chinese descent, so I guess she would count.

Silly Gundy, that's "niggah" and not "nigga". The teacher said it was a six letter word, he even showed how he pronounced it.

Kris, don't use the "N" word. You are putting your life in danger.

Secondly, I must be honest with you. I really don't believe you grew up in California. Don't curse the Philippines like that.
