Next gen is...
Graphics, of course with every new console there is updated machines that have alot better graphics.
Online, its important these days, its almost a given in games now. If a game doesnt have online play, then its going to be frowned upon. Unless its a game that just cant do anything online with.
Controls, look at skate....this is skateboarding "next gen" compared to tony hawks controls which are from ps1.
These are easy to say are next gen, but with better consoles should come better programming.
Gameplay, i expect enemies in games to have higher IQ. I expect gameplay to be smarter.
Modes, I think one thing that we will see more and more are in game video capturing. Tony hawk PG, Halo 3, Skate, and other games are starting to have ways to take your gameplay and record it and upload it to show your friends. Things like this are great for almost any game.
For instance....Tony Hawk and Smackdown are examples of games that were made during PS1, and are still pretty much living off that. The only thing next gen about these games are the use of analog and the graphics. They havent made a big leap yet. Tony hawk games have done stuff like Nail the Trick, THPG will have the replay editor, but the game itself is still pretty much the same. Controls are stale and old. Thats where skate comes in. Their control scheme yells out "next gen". Smackdown has been riding its game since the first version. Really, the only thing thats different these days is hot spots, graphics, and some submission moves. Really that is not big enough leap over 8 or so years. I mean Raw for xbox had replays, custom tracks for your CAWS music intro, hell even No Mercy had where you could edit the wrestlers attire. These things arent even in the newest versions of smackdown. They really could go the extra step and add some of these things, along with a replay editor, and alot more little things that would make a big difference. But they just update the roster, add new hot spots, change the story mode and call it a new game. Those two games need to stop living off their past games, and revolutionize them to make them fresh. Right now both those games are old and past their prime, and their companies are just riding the cash cow because most people will buy those games just because of the name on the front. But i have a feeling Skate is going to sell more then THPG, because its next gen, its new, and people are tired of the same old tony hawk games that they keep riding. Its just too bad that there isnt another company like 2k that could make a wwe game and take THQ on.
