Being an Indian, I obviously voted for the Taj Mahal. Having seen it up close and personal, there isn't a doubt in my mind it belongs in the list that bears the name "wonders of the world".

I love reading about the seven wonders of the world (and its variations) and here's my top 7 in no particular order:

- Stonehenge
- Pyramids of Giza
- Taj Mahal
- The Great Wall
- The Hanging Gardens
- Colosseum
- Acropolis of Athens

Runner-up: Chichen Itza, The Great Lighthouse.

I hope the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty do not make it through. The Eiffel tower was built in like, within a week as part of an expo, and almost by accident, it was kept and suddenly became an icon for Paris. I've also seen the Eiffel Tower, and while I wouldn't say it compares to the list above or its significance, it's a lot better than the Statue of Liberty. I've seen the Statue of Liberty up close, and it's not even amazing, not even close. As the Eiffel Tower, it's simply an icon, rather than a feat of human achievement in a specific time of human history.

Too bad the Hanging Gardens, the Colossus, and the Great Lighthouse is not listed. I guess they're only going for existing wonders.

Looks out of place

Being Chinese, I chose the Great Wall as my number one choice, but I think I had the Taj Mahal as my second, and the Easter Islands as my 3rd. Not sure.

It's out of place because so many modern buildings surround it, but it looked out of place when it was built because it was such a monstrous feat of construction. It probably wins the longest construction award for a cathedral at least.

Yup, I was impressed by the Eiffel Tower moreso than I thought I would be. Especially at night when it lights up every hour or whatever it was...wow, what a sight.

However, I don't understand why the 7 wonders have to be relatively old structures. I watched a show in the National Geographic Channel about the man-made islands that were recently built and are still being built in Dubai, UAE and the amount of work that goes into them is AMAZING. Maybe I just don't appreciate the history of those structures as much as I should, but I find many modern structures more fascinating.

I thought the whole idea was lame when I read about it on Yahoo when voting first started. We shouldn't change the 7 wonders because people are too stupid and aren't educated to know what the Colossus at Rhodes or the Hanging Gardens are.


I just voted. I thought about the old wonders and one theme was it makes you think "what the fuck? how did they do that?" and I tihnk the 7 I picked best resembles that:

-Angkor Wat (symbol of Southeast Asia)
-Chichen Itza (a poor man's pyramids)
-Easter Island Statues (so mysterious)
-Great Wall (a lot of Asian people built it)
-Hagia Sophia (the interior takes your breath away)
-Macchu Picchu (a city in the mountains, what else you need?)
-Stonehenge (a lot like the Easter Island statues, shouded in mystery. how they built both still makes me wonder)

Well, for example, what makes Stonehenge so fascinating is that, despite it just being large boulders, is that nobody can figure out how they were able to move and raise those large boulders with the technology that they had. With the Eiffel Tower, for instance, it was built so quickly because they had the technology and material to construct it. Some of these older structures required so much man-power and individual handwork without the use of machines to get stuff built.

They aren't replacing the 7 world wonders, this is a whole new batch all together. Atleast that's what I've gathered from it.

There will be the "Old 7 Wonders of the World" and the "New 7 Wonders of the World".

So yeah, everyone who is getting their panties in a bunch saying people will forget about the Gardens of Babylon or Colossus, I don't think that's the case. Then again, the world has gotten so dumb in the last decade orso, I mean we have Paris Hilton as your top story...I rest my case.

100% agreed; I was surprised the Colosseum was the only building in that list from Italy.
There are lots of buildings, even entire towns, that were built before the XVIII century and haven't been touched since then here, and they are for sure more fascinating than the Colosseum.

Living in Milan and coming from a Venetian family, I'm kind of offended they did not include Milan's Cathedral (which IMO is one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings in the world) or Venice into the list.

As much as I hate Italian society, I must say Italy is one of the most history-rich and fascinating places in the world.

Not really.
There were concerns about the steel used in the tower since it was so heavy compared to the standards then.
Being built quickly just shows the engineering marvel and planning that went with it.

I wish they had also included in the selection the castle of Chambord in France, probably one of the biggest castles in the world that belonged to the king François I. It has stairs designed by Leonardo Da Vinci (2nd pic).

Gaudi is one of the most interesting people in the history of the world I think.

Sagrada Familia actually isn't even close to the largest thing Gaudi has ever built. That would be Parque Guell.

Sagrada Familia actually still isn't finished being built, but you can go up one of the towers. It's a pretty incredible experience. First you take an elevator, then you walk a spiriling staircase all the way to the top. The view is incredible.

Fuck it, I would just like to nominate Barcelona as a wonder of the world.
