KIG's Quarterback Rankings

Image
Russell is my number one rated quarterback

The quarterback position is not as strong as at has been in the past. But, in my opinion there could be a few guys that will be drafted very early, and some sleepers that could turn some heads when they are drafted. Here is my quarterback rankings for the 2007 draft.

1) JaMarcus Russell
2) Drew Stanton
3) Brady Quinn
4) Troy Smith
5) Kevin Kolb
6) John Beck
7) Trent Edwards
8.) Jordan Palmer
9) Jeff Rowe
10) Tyler Palko
11) Jared Zabransky
12) Lester Ricard
13) Toby Korrodi
14) Chris Leak
15) Zac Taylor

First Day Quarterbacks: JaMarcus Russell will probably be the first overall selection in the draft. The Raiders and Al Davis really like the guys who are big (6'6" 260) and have a strong arm. Two good traits when looking for an NFL quarterback. Russell really improved his stock after his great bowl game against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Drew Stanton can be a first round guy. Although he was injured, Stanton has really impressed me in all the games that I have watched him in. I really think that the transition from college to the NFL will be very easy for Stanton. He shows great feet in the pocket and he has good size for the position (6'3" 235). Brady Quinn has seen his stock fall ever since JaMarcus Russell came onto the scene and beat him in the bowl game. I believe that Quinn will actually be drafted ahead of Stanton, but Stanton is the best overall player. Quinn will fit with a team somewhere and possibly be able to start a few games next year. Troy Smith didn't really have a great Senior Bowl and hasn't seen his stock move much ever since the National Championship game. The Heisman winner will have to impress scouts at the combine if he wants to be drafted in the first round. Right now, Smith is likely to fall to the second and the hometown Browns could consider drafting him with the 35th overall pick. Kevin Kolb is the final guy who I can see drafted on the first day. Along with Smith, Kolb didn't do much in the Senior Bowl and didn't improve his stock like Cutler did last year. Kolb had huge numbers this year for Houston and can make a very capable backup for a team right now. In the future, he can start, but there are not many teams looking for a starting quarterback right now. Kolb with be drafted in the middle of the third round and will round out the first five quarterbacks taken.

Second Day Quarterbacks: John Beck is a guy who could be a first day selection if it wasn't for his age. Beck is 26 years old which is a pretty big factor to teams who are looking to go young. Beck doesn't neccisarily have the size to be a huge factor, but his numbers in college are just too good to overlook. Look for Beck to be one of the first selections on day two. Trent Edwards is a very interesting prospect. Playing at Stanford, he hardly got any exposure and never got to be shown on television. The truth about Edwards is that he is really a complete quarterback. His stock has fallin for me a little bit because of his foot injury that he endured this year. Edwards would make a good late fourth rounder. Jordan Palmer may be able to shoot up some draft boards due to his amazing size and potential. Palmer is inconsistent at times, but he is one of my favorite quarterbacks to watch. When he is on, he can lead a team. When hes off, he is not playing up to potential. The younger brother of Carson will probably be drafted in the 6th round, but I think his talent is better than where he will be drafted. Jeff Rowe has enjoyed a nice college bowl season. In the Shrine Game, he was named the MVP after his long throw to Paul Williams really exposed some of Rowe abilities. Playing at Nevada, he may struggle at first with going under center. But, Rowe will be a 5th round player. Tyler Palko has fallen very far off of my board. He has absolutley not throw power and tends to catapult more than throw the ball, with his bad throwing technique. Palko also struggles with size which hurts him even more. Look for Palko to slip all the way to the sixth round. Jared Zabransky has showed the whole nation that he can play. His heart and willingness to win is incredible. More mobile than people would think, Zabransky will turn a lot of heads with his forty time. Zabransky could be drafted in the ladder part of the 6th round and possibly find a home with a good playoff team. Lester Ricard has been a disappointment to me this off-season. He overthrew almost every ball in the Shrine Game and looked to stare down his receivers way to long. His size and arm strength are really the only thing that will make one team draft him in the seventh round. Toby Korrodi had a very good Texas vs. Nation practice week. Proto-typical size for the position, Korrodi will be able to hatch onto a team as a very capable third stringer. He will be drafted in the late seventh round. Chris Leak has improved his stock a little bit, but is still a better college player than he will be NFL player. Leak did win the national championship, but he doesn't have all the tools to become a good NFL player. His size will hurt him, and being a non factor when running makes him an even worse prospect. He is a winner though and you can't take that away from him. Leak will most likely go late seventh or might not be drafted at all. Zac Taylor had a good run at Nebraska, but will not translate very well to the NFL. He is an okay passer in the pocket, but doesn't really show much ability to roll out and make accurate passes out of the pocket. Taylor will not be drafted, but could be signed as a UDFA.

How is Stanton a better plater than Quinn? In the past 2 years Quinn had more yards, touchdowns, completions and yards per attempt. He also had less interceptions, a better rating and more victories. Quinn is also slightly bigger and had a better college mentor. I guess I just don't see where you are coming from.

I think Leak will be steal. He throws one of the nicest spirals I have ever seen. Two things really kept him from being one of the top flite QB's. (1) he had to learn three different offenses in his four years at Florida and (2) the offense that Urban Meyer ended up implementing did not fit a pocket QB like Leak very well.

Well about Quinn, he is a product of the Notre Dame system. Look at all the talent that surrounded him these past years (Samardzija, McKnight, Stovall) compared to Stanton's supprorting cast (Trannon, Reed). Plus statistics are not everything you know.

Leak will not make a good transition to the NFL. He is 5'11" 7/8 and really isn't athletic at all. He does throw a good spiral, but his arm is so weak. He tends to hang the ball on long throws. Also, most of his yards during the year were on easy slant routes and check-downs.

Great quarterbacks make their supporting cast look good. Either way, the talent difference between the two supporting cast's still doesn't make up the difference between the careers of these two.

It is true that stats don't tell the whole story, but in this case they give a decent summary.

Career Totals:
Quinn has had 11,476 yards 95 td's and 39 picks
Stanton has had 6,524 yards, 42 td's and 28 picks

In the past 2 years (which will be more indicative of how they perform in the NFL):
Quinn has had 7,059 yards, 69 td's and 14 picks
Stanton has had 4,884 yards, 34 td's and 22 picks

Stanton is inconsistent, very vulnerable to injury (which has a high chance ofoccuring because he decides to run too often...something who won't have a prayer of doing in the pro's), never looks off his targets (which is why he get's picked fairly often), and will need to adjust from a "college-style" offense (unlike Quinn who was running a "pro-style" offense at ND).

I am not saying the Quinn is the end-all-be-all of QB's, just that he is in a much better prospect than Stanton.

But, having that said, I am always open for debate. Let's hear what your argument for claiming Stanton's superiority is.

Leak will not make a good transition to the NFL. He is 5'11" 7/8 and really isn't athletic at all. He does throw a good spiral, but his arm is so weak. He tends to hang the ball on long throws. Also, most of his yards during the year were on easy slant routes and check-downs.

Um...he's 6' dude....no one gives a shit about 1/8 of an inch. Still, the lack of height will hurt him whether it really matters or not (Drew Brees is only 6' and look how well he has done). Leak runs a 4.75 which is as fast as your boy Stanton...he just doesn't choose to scramble as often. How long have you watched Leak anyways? This year only? Because that would explain your claim for his weak arm and the fact he get's his yard off of slants. He can't choose what routes his WR's run...Meyer does that. Like I said, he got a raw deal having to (1) switch systems during the middle of his career and (2) play in a wierd-a** college-type system that doesnt fit his strengths. Take a look at some game tapes from his frosh and soph years, the guy has a good arm.

I see Quinn going first overall to Raiders, and Russell 2nd to Lions. 3rd will probably be Calvin Jonson to Buccs and Troy Smith to Browns(since he wants to stay in Ohio badly).

The Lions will not draft a QB, they will go with Joe Thomas. JaMarcus Russell will go 1st, Al Davis loves guys with strong arms. I agree with you on CJ, but Troy Smith is not a 1st round pick at all. Troy will fall to Cleveland in the 2nd round.

Cobber, you're an idiot. Stanton runs a legit 4.65 and is much faster than Leak. I challenge you to find one person that says Leak is faster than Stanton. Leak is not good at rolling out of the pocket and isn't a good pocket passer. They are my opinions and I know more about the draft than you, aite.

Yeah I kinda went too high with the QB's, but Quinn will be drafted early, and if I was Cleveland I'd say fuck Smith get Quinn who is NFL-ready, but Smith is shaky, he can be next McNabb or next Chris Weinke. Broncos should get a DE in 1st round, maybe if Jamaal Anderson falls really deep to 21st which I highly doubt or the underrated Quentin Moses from Bulldogs.

Yeah Anderson will probably go top 10. I like Charles Johnson and how he fits in the Denver defense. He played on Georgia all year and outplayed Moses.

Idiot? Let's see, I will have completed a double major in Biology and Chemistry this May, and you are where? Oh yeah, high school...being called an idiot by a 14 year-old just doesn't faze me.

You should also take not that I said Leak could run as fast as Stanton, so why should I find someone that says Leak is faster. You are trying to make me debate a position in which I did not take.

As for showing you a person who thinks that Leak is as fast as Stanton, here are the numbers for the NFL Combine which was held a few weeks back:
Leak = 4.74
Stanton = 4.75
http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/nf ... &order=ASC
So, correct me if I am wrong, but don't these times indicate that Leak is in fact as fast as Stanton? So how does that crow taste?

Anyways, you are missing the whole point of my last post. I wasn't comparing Stanton vs Quinn, not Leak.

I know more about the draft than you

Meh. Apparently you know something that nobody knows since not a single reputable sports writer has Stanton anywhere close to Quinn on their draft boards.

You know I really don't know why I bother arguing. I would love a good debate where people use facts and not just attacks (i.e. the quote above), but I guess I that is too much to expect from an 8th or 9th grader.

Cobber, just becuase sports writers dont think Stanton is as good as Quinn doesn't make it so... but I do agree with you: theres no way Stanton will be anywhere near as good as Quinn. Quinn looks like Leinart did last draft, stock dropping becuase of similar question marks and yet he came in and made his team better.

I would've thought Troy Smith would have gone to Baltimore before the Mgahee deal, but since their draft is now depleted I expect them to draft a LB.

Adrian Peterson should be drafted by Cleveland.

The only way the Bucs don't take Johnson is if they trade for multiple picks, but I don't see that happening. If Tampa had the first pick they'd take this guy.

I can see Quinn going to either the Redskins, Vikings or Dolphins... if Johnson wasn't such an athletic freak I could also seeing him landing in Tampa, but thats a reach.

This draft looks to be almost as unpredictable as last years.

I think JaMarcus is a solid #1 (wager) to the Raiders if they keep Moss/Porter around .. Quinn isn't going to get the ball downfield enough for those guys, and that's what Russell does best.

man .. the Lions cannot be happy with Kitna at QB .. rather Mike Martz can't be
