Rescued boy was forced to call his captor 'Dad'

It was a simple message, posted on the internet by what seemed to be just another well-wisher who had followed the agonising hunt for the missing schoolboy Shawn Hornbeck.

"How long are you planing (sic) to look for your son?" it inquired of the boy's parents, signing off as Shawn Devlin of Kirkwood, Missouri.

Only yesterday, as Shawn, 15, was reunited with his family after an extraordinary kidnap ordeal that lasted for four years, did it emerge that the message, left on the family's website in December 2005, may have been a cryptic cry for help from the boy himself. He was using the surname of his captor, Michael Devlin, who forced the boy to call him "Dad".

I find it interesting that he was missing for four years and only 30 minutes away from his home.

Thats ridiculous. The kid obviously knew where he was and I'm guessing in 4 years the captor would have at least made one mistake where the kid would have had a chance to call for help or have found a way out.

I heard about this on the news today. It was said the neighbours saw him walking around outside and just assumed he was the captors son.. If he is outside alone.. for fucks sake run. or ask the neighbours for help.

It wasn't like he was locked in the basement of a isolated farmhouse or something.
Heck he was even able to surf the net :S If he could have the time to leave a msg on his familys website .. Why not just email the address where he was?

If you had read the article, he had Stockholm Syndrome, which is very common for those who have been kidnapped for several years. They become attached and loyal to their captor.

Both boys appeared well, but psychologists speculated that Shawn – who disappeared while riding his bicycle to a friend's house in 2002, when he was 11 – may have developed Stockholm Syndrome, a condition in which hostages fall under the spell of their captors.

He had passed up numerous opportunities to make his getaway, it emerged, including being allowed out to ride his bicycle in the street outside Devlin's apartment, and trips to the shops. He told neighbours that Devlin was his father and, when they asked about his mother's whereabouts, became emotional and told them that she had died in a car crash.

I'm don't remember where I heard it, but I heard about a guy who asked Mike Tyson to punch him in the ribs in order to break one off so he could give himself oral. Hence, not needing the dog for the peanutbutter.
