Old Versions of PS2 vs New Versions of PS2

My PS2 finally gave up after a few good years. I was one that waited in line to purchase one during the launch date (which makes mine one the first versions). Since the warranty has already expired and the cost of sending it to Sony to repair it would probably cost about the same as buying a new one, I decided to clean/repair it on my own. I've read other forums where you can clean the lense with a q-tip, change the voltage settings on the lense, and everything should be just fine. I spent MAD hours trying to jump start this thing back to normal , but tried all the tricks (so far) and still recieve "DISC READ ERROR" (w/blue bottom discs, DVD's etc.) everytime I start it up again . I'm finally giving up and probably going to buy a new one with an extended warranty (probably long enough until PS3 comes out). So a question for all you gamers out there.........do you know if the newer version out in the stores now have any existing problems (ex. blue disc games, DVD movies, etc. etc.) ? Any info would be appreciated............Thanks in advance

I had the same problem with my PS2. Cleaning it worked for me.

As for the newer versions, I have friends who have the newer versions. So far, i haven't seen or heard any problems with theirs. They wouldn't let me open theirs, so I don't know exactly what the differences are.

What cleaning methods did you try? Was it similar to what I did? I pretty much used one of those compressed air cans, blew out the dust, then tried to clean the lense. When that didn't work I messed with the voltage settings , but even that didn't work. Maybe you had a certain technique that I haven't tried yet. I'll give anything a try before I drop another 2 bills on a new console......thanks!

I didn't try to mess up with the electronics. Basically, I found some collected dust and some hairballs (i have a cat) in the lens. Not exactly in the lens, but the metal bar it moves on. I cleaned that out, then I wiped off the lens itself, not with a cotton swab but with a disc cleaner. So my lens now moves properly.

Although, sometimes i still have problems with blue discs. So when the disc read error appears, I just tilt my PS2 vertically until the game loads, then i put it back into horizontal position. In what position do you have your PS2 on? Maybe if you just change the position, then it will work. (You probably tried that already)

My guess is that you probably scratched your lense while cleaning it. When I was cleaning the lens itself, i was putting as little pressure to it as i could. Either that, or you probably short circuited the PS2 itself by opening it and touching some of it's parts. (due to static in our body)

If nothing really works, you are stuck at buying a new one. That sucks.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I've tried everything possible. And while messing with the voltage settings, I made sure I was grounded, but I guess my console finally gave up , which sucks...........thanks anyways dude!

my cuzn had a similar problem.. he sent it to sony now it works perfect..

about old vs new... old ones lense breaks easier and has to be replace.. long periods/constant play could of caused the problems

Yeah I think that's what happened to mine. I did use it alot for my tourneys that I had around my house. Oh well It's probably time to grab the new version now.
