Best cpu/mobo combo?

Anybody in here knows how to build a computer? If so I need your help.

I'm thinking about getting an Opteron 165 processor and the Asus A8N Premium motherboard socket 939. I will pair it up with 1GB DDR Corsair XMS memory and finally a Nvidia 6800 GS. I will only be purchasing a cpu,mobo and graphic card since I have everything else (HD, memory, PS, etc) and my question is is the opteron 165, asus premium mobo and 6800 the best I can buy for under $1000 ?

Please help me out here. I was debating between the X2 4400+ and the Opteron 165 and lots of people are saying opt are more reliable and stable but how good is it for gaming?
