AW-NW's random daily knowledge thread...

Postby AlwaysWhat,NeverWhy on Thu Jan 19, 2006 2:21 am

Each day I'll post an article from Wiki here, random in nature.

Just to promote a bit of constructional reading, if nothing else. You don't have to post here, it's preferable if you only take 5 minutes of your time to read the article.

Random Knowledge #1

The Battle of Midway. Changed aerial warfare as we know it for more than half a century.

It's actually a good idea (Y). I bet this will turn into one of the many political debates around here.

Funny, I always thought Gandhi was a female. Or maybe I'm confusing him with Mahatma brand rice... or even more, I could be thinking of Mother Theresa... i really don't know. :?

Edit:

Here's an article on a guy who I've always thought was pretty cool. (Y)

You should check out the movie Ghandi. Won a bunch of Oscars and it was a nice movie although I admit it was a little dry in a lot of scenes. Then again, it was an old movie. Such a great man.

One of my favorites, too. Ben Kingsley was superb in it... And it's pretty much the true story of Gandhi ,from what little I know, rather than a Hollywood production. :D

Random Knowledge #3

The Unified Field Theory: An attempt to unify the two basic theories that govern physics, Einstein's General Relativity theory (macrocosm) and Planck/Bohr's Quantum theory/mechanics (microcosm) . This is the most bold attempt in the history of human sciences, in my opinion, and could open the gateway to a whole new way of understanding our surroundings, if it is completed.

Tesla being the most multi-versed mind since Da Vinci could be up for debate. :)

On the topic of bloodbaths, have one that often goes by unnoticed when Israel is discussed...: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabra_and_Shatila

Indeed. Although not in a large scale war like the previous ones, it was horrific as well. :(

Random Knowledge #6

The Black Hole. A concentration of mass so greatly dense, that nothing , not even light itself, can escape its' pull. The study of these mysterious objects might one day reveal to us whether time travel is physically possible, and answer many questions about the fabric of time itself.
