Overpaid

Postby FendeR` on Sun Aug 14, 2005 1:04 pm

Am I the only one who in the back of my mind has an itching feeling that pretty much all celebrities/actors/athletes are incredibly overpaid? Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but it doesn't seem like many people agree with me (or at least bring up) that you could arguably say an actor is no more important than a construction worker.

Let's say the tables were turned, and the construction business was cut-throat, and constructions workers were paid millions of dollars. Who knows how fast buildings/construction could be done. It just irks me that actors get paid to sit in front of the camera and smile, and athletes get paid just to play sports (which doesn't really help anyone in the real world, or at least not deserving enough of the kind of contracts they have).

I don't really grasp the concept of an actor being paid $20 million dollars to make a movie, but I guess I can it is somewhat rational when you think about it. The movie industry is HUGE, every movie that is released, no matter how shit it is, makes millions of dollars for all those involved.. . when you put things into perspective, if a movie makes $450 million globally, then paying $20 million (or 4.4%) isn't really that bad.

^^^ that is correct....they are overpaid, but in comparison to how much the movies make, the money they make isn't so significant....it's the same as a business paying 30% of its sales on wages....is similar in the movies, except we are dealing in tens of millions of dollars instead of tens of thousands of dollars....

It's all about careers getting payed proportionally to the revenue they generate.. if actors/athletes/celebrities weren't getting payed as much as they then more likely than not there'd be even a smaller distribution of profit.. ie to a bunch of CEOs and managers..

They're overpaid in the sense that their earnings suggest the importance of their occupations is greater than what it really is. But as a couple of folks have already pointed out the ridiculous amounts of money pro athletes and actors/celebrities make are proportionate to the amount of money in professional sports and entertainment.

It always seems so greedy when athletes and actors hold out for more money because generally the amounts they turning down seem very generous and most of us couldn't refuse to work simply because we are refused a payrise. Then again, no matter what field of work you're in, if you have a chance to make more money not many of us would turn down the opportunity.

Why don't rappers help people in the 'ghetto'. Together, these overpaid professionals can make poverty history, one by one by one.

There's a quote in The Jordan Rules that says if the NBA gave MJ a cheque for $100 million dollars, they would still have made a profit due to the amount of money his presence generated. It's the same thing with actors, musicians etc... the amount of money they make personally is usually tiny compared to what the record labels or whoever actually make from them.

I don't care about actors and athletes. I care about the corporation executives who are stealing hunderds of millions of dollars from companies and getting away with it. One of those bitches costed my dad his job. They take away the benefits and they lay off a few hundred people and then collect the money for themselves.

Or they'll do insider trading. Pathetic.

Yep, I think I also read it in Time or Newsweek (HA!). $ 1.1 billion, that's a lot of cash, no wonder companies are trying to find the "next Jordan" in terms of selling power. Too bad Kobe is out. HAHA!
