Sig disputes...

Postby RedTorro on Fri May 14, 2004 4:46 am

It's one thing to warn people and it's another to continually harass and bother someone for something as dumb as a sig. Sure rules are rules but that doesn't mean that they can't be changed. It's obvious that this one particular mod that keeps pmin'g over and over and over and over again, has nothing else better to do. Andrew need to open the can of whoop ass here and keep these mods in check. I've been here at these forums forever and I think I've earned some seniority and with that should come some respect. Get the sticks out of your ass, enforce the rules but don't hit people over the head with them unless the person is really pulling down the community and being obnoxious.

well if you've been harassed by a mod that's not fair cause too many people here have sigs that are outrageously long (even if the trend seems to be decreasing). Anyway, I think that the rules written here have to be enforced even if it's an hard work.

But above all, I've got a suggestion : What about removing sigs for everyone ? It's been 18 monhts since the new forum is opened, and I can hardly remember a sig that's worth it. I'm most of the time angry against people that have long signatures and that never post more than a line.

No more sig, no more rules broken and no more infinite scroll down :)

I'm sorry, but this issue is being blown out of proportion - this certainly isn't the way to raise it. We've got to meet each other halfway when it comes to moderating. If we don't enforce every rule for everyone, people will complain we're being biased. If we enforce some of the rules for most people, people will complain that we're not doing our job. It's a case of damned if you damned, damned if you don't.

I know you've been around a long time, and believe me, I appreciate everyone who sticks around and makes a positive contribution. But that still doesn't give you the right to flame mods in the General Talk forum or through private messaging. A simple request to modify a signature to comply with the rules shouldn't cause so much hassle.

It may only seem like a small thing, but there's a reason we go into so much detail with the rules. Even though I may not be offended by certain material, I have to base the rules on what may be offensive (and what may get us into trouble).

I don't want to receive angry emails from parents (yes, I've received them) because the forum has proved to be a source of lewd or otherwise unacceptable images or content. I don't want GameSpy terminating our hosting because we've broken the rules with our content or stance on certain issues (such as pirated games and other illegal downloads).

If we're going to be too casual about enforcing the rules, we might as well not have them. If we don't enforce every rule, then it is an issue when we warn someone for something most people have been getting away with for sometime.

There are limits that are enforced. Some latitude is given, but if signatures are in violation of the rules, the user is messaged and politely requested to modify their signature. I would rather not disable signatures, and most forums do allow them without too many problems.

Would it be okay to have a sig as an animated gifs if there is like maybe 3 frames, like Martins?

Well, I generally make an exception if the animated gif complies with all other rules and isn't too big, just as I make exceptions when still images are slightly bigger than the limit.

We try to enforce every rule to the letter in every situation, but we don't want to be ogres. If it's not too much of a problem (ie it loads quickly for 56k users), I'm prepared to make a small exception.

I don't make exceptions, that way it's easier for me to know I'm enforcing everything uniformly.

If I tell you to change something...change it. Then consult with Andrew about what it was if you think it should stay. If he gives the go ahead to bring it back then it's fine with me. But follow the rules first, don't complain, and change it.

This topic is getting very tiresome. If people can't be bothered to be considerate of other people's sensibilities and needs for easy forum browsing when creating their sigs...then maybe they really shouldn't be allowed at all.

The Moderators jobs are to enforce the rules. If you don't listen to them when they are telling you what rule you have broken, what are they suppost to do? :?

Just follow the rules, it's easier
