problems installing directx 9 on xp

ay guys,

my mate was trying to install direct x 9 on xp so that we could play nfs underground and we kept getting an error that said

"could not pass windows logo testing" or somethin like that. we tried heaps of stuff that we read on the net and no solution. Anyone had anythin similar to this?
