Willis Reed looks to win a number right after Cowens won one
-21st number of the many
-#18 was won by Dave Cowens
-#19 continues the trend of not many talented players, but great numbers follow it
-You can vote for players in any way you want: On-court impact, Off-court impact, championships etc.
Nominees:
1. Lenny Wilkens (1968-69 to 1973-74)
P/36 | R/36 | A/36 | TS% | Ortg | Drtg | PER | Ws/48 |
18.2 | 4.5 | 8.1 | .522 | Nr | Nr | 18.8 | .125 |
* These years were probably the best of his career. His numbers across the board were as good as they got in his career.
Lenny Wilkens got inducted as both a player and a coach. The difference is he didn't win a title as a player.
In fact, during this period Wilkens didn't even make the Playoffs.
He had solid stats, led the league in assists per game and AST%, but he still couldn't help translate it into wins.
2. Willis Reed (1964-65 to 1973-74)
P/36 | R/36 | A/36 | TS% | Ortg | Drtg | PER | Ws/48 |
19.0 | 13.1 | 1.9 | .523 | Nr | Nr | 18.6 | .156 |
* Mr. New York himself.
Reed helped the Knicks win their two titles, as he was one of the best defenders in the league during that stretch.
A 20/13 guy with around 20 PER in his prime, Reed wasn't as good as the premier big man of that era. Still, he managed to lead the league in win shares and DWS.
His career was cut short by a leg injury.
Other Notable Player Shoutout
Raja Bell was a good enough defender and three point shooter. He also had some minor altercations with Kobe. Tony Campbell was a volume scorer for those bad pre-KG Minnesota teams. Ray Felix was a solid center for the 50s Knicks. 18/14 on 18 PER are solid numbers. Beno Udrih has been wearing it for most of his career. He is a solid backup guard, but with the talent level at his position nowadays, it's surprising he gets that much playing time. Don Nelson really did have some good seasons playing for Boston. He was a 18/8.5 forwards per 36 for his career. Sam Cassell was the best point guard in the league when he wore it, at least for one year. 20/7 on 113 Ortg, 22.8 PER, .566 TS% and .205 Ws/48. And the Timberwolves make the Conference Finals. Vern Mikkelsen wore it for his whole career. He was a underrated player during those Mikan years. Led the league in Ws/48 one season, and was a solid double-double forward.
