Jabari Parker Out For The Season With Torn ACL

Jabari Parker will likely miss the rest of the season with a "suspected torn ACL," according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Parker left last night's win over the Suns with a "sprained knee" after he collided with PJ Tucker. He becomes the second lottery pick to suffer a season-ending injury, after Julius Randle broke his leg in his first game of the season.

Parker was putting together a nice season, starting every game for the 13-12 Bucks and averaging 12.3 points and 5.5 rebounds a night in 29.5 minutes. He was part of a young core along with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brandon Knight, and Khris Middleton—and Larry Sanders if you consider him "young"—that led the Bucks to sixth in the East. Assuming continued stellar play, Parker was likely the frontrunner to be voted Rookie of the Year.

RIP my fantasy season

Means two things going forward:

1) ROTY is open for grab. Wiggins sucks but his hype probably can carry him to a ROTY award. Just can't sleep on KJ McDaniels though.

2) Antetokoumpos (did I spell it right?) now has all the green light signal at MIP award.

It's truly disappointing to see Jabari Parker go down though. Kidd was using this kid in all sorts of ways and it was working out pretty good. Was surprised to see him thriving at PF position. This kid probably will become quite good in a few years.

Brutal. That sucks.

It seems like we're seeing a lot more players go down with knee injuries these past few years. It'd be interesting to find a common link or cause here - a certain design of shoe, or a support that's putting more pressure on the knee, perhaps - and find a way to cut down on these injuries.

Injuries are an unfortunate possibility when it comes to sport, but if there's anything that can be done to reduce the likelihood of these injuries, so much the better.

This means K.J. McDaniels for ROY?

Lame. (N) Don't think this will prevent them from making the playoffs, but it's no fun to see good young players go down with injury. Hopefully he and Randle can bounce back next year

Randle, Jabari, Embiid, Aaron Gordon(he might come back but...). Some of the biggest names in this year's draft all hampered by injuries.

Good point. Another reason imho is because of physical condition and intensity that's required to play at pro level these days. Perhaps young kids these days aren't coming into the league ready but gets hurt while trying to keep up with NBA level of physical intensity.

That's why the NBA needs to work on instituting a real minor league system, Cut the NCAA out of the equation like in Hockey and Baseball and make the minimum age to play in the NBA 21.

So the D-League isn't a real minor league?

experience won't help prevent injuries. These guys are getting bigger and faster so guys like Rose will get hurt because they play too hard and it wears on their body.

But it's not as though there weren't athletic players who pushed their bodies to the limit in previous decades. That's why I'm wondering, especially with all the advances in sports medicine and whatnot...well, to coin a phrase that's usually used more positively, is it the shoes? Is it a particular type of knee or ankle support? Is something making the courts more slippery these days?

I just think it's worth looking into, to see if there's a common factor in all these serious knee injuries. If there is, then identifying it and doing something about it is surely going to go a long way in preventing these injuries from happening. You can't guarantee that injuries won't occur in sports, but if something is exacerbating the risk, then the sensible thing to do would be to make changes accordingly.

Remember when Stephen curry couldn't stop wearing ankle top shoes and spraining his ankles?

The same could be said about American football and helmet technology. It's supposedly better now, but it doesn't seem to be preventing more injuries than in the past

Perhaps they are truly better in some ways, but a design flaw now opens them up to other problems.

Watching Parker's injury, it kind of reminds me of Rose's injury last season, with his leg seeming to slip out from under him and jamming the knee at a bad angle. It makes me wonder if there is some flaw in the design of the soles of basketball shoes these days. Or, as I said, is the court too slippery? Have they changed the type of paint they're using on all the decals, or something like that?

You can't rule out sheer bad luck and coincidence, but you can't help wondering if something like that could be the cause of all these injuries.
