Kings interested in Josh Smith

Postby _Steve_ on Thu Jul 17, 2014 5:12 pm

The Detroit Pistons and the Sacramento Kings have resumed trade discussions on a deal that could send Josh Smith to Sacramento, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

From ESPN
Sources told ESPN.com the Kings have continued to express interest in Smith and the parties are on the hunt for a third team that could help facilitate the deal.

Josh Smith's stay in Detroit might only end up lasting for one season if a deal reportedly being discussed between the Pistons and Kings comes to fruition.
As ESPN.com reported last month, Detroit and Sacramento have engaged in trade discussions that would potentially land Smith in the same frontcourt with DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. Initial talks called for Sacramento to send Jason Thompson and either Derrick Williams or Jason Terry to the Pistons for Smith, but those discussions reached an impasse and were pushed into July along with the rest of both teams' free-agent business, sources said.

Don't forget Rudy Gay. That makes a quite the trio, you know.

I've always wondered what the Kings' plan is. It's become clear they don't have one.

Kings are so desperate to pay luxury tax for a thirty win team. Getting Josh Smith would continue to follow the Isiah Knicks model. If Detroit can do this without giving up picks, they've got to.

They let the fan favorite Isaiah walk for nothing and signed an inferior guard that peaked long time ago to a bad contract. And now they are after Josh Smith. Wtf r they thinking. :shake:

A case of (still relatively) new owners trying to make a splash, perhaps? The team's future in Sacramento seems a bit securer these days, and they're not trying to find a buyer, so some of the responsibility has gone out the window.

Savvy move for Detroit if they can pull it off.

A lot of fans here are uneasy about Petey D's decisions now despite feeling great about how the Rudy Gay trade worked out. It seemed they had already decided that Isaiah wasn't part of the future, but still should have thought ahead and gotten more value in return (or even match the reasonable offer from PHX and trade him later).

That said, Josh might play better if he's back at the 4 and next to offensive forces like Cousins and Gay, which makes some sense. Coach Malone needs some legit defenders on the roster, and Smith could help protect the rim (not Demarcus' forte). The buy-low philosophy worked for Rudy, so why not Josh? If we dump some of our bad contracts like Thompson and get him without giving up assets like McCallum or McLemore, it might be worth the risk.
