Dunk Contest 2014 Thread - Dun Fucked it Up

There will no longer be one winner crowned, instead the competition will feature 2 teams consisting of 3 players each, and it will be 2 rounds of action — East vs. West. In other words, it will be John Wall, Paul George and Terrence Ross vs. Damian Lillard, Ben McLemore and Harrison Barnes.

the competition will tip off with a Freestyle Round where the dunkers for each conference will have 90 seconds to showcase as many dunks as they want. At the conclusion of the Freestyle Round, the panel of judges will then choose a winner by voting “East” or “West.” The winning conference will earn the advantage of deciding whether its dunkers will dunk first or second in the head-to-head battles that take place in the Battle Round.

The Battle Round will feature head-to-head matchups pitting East dunkers vs. West dunkers, with the judges choosing a winner for each battle. Upon losing a head-to-head battle, that dunker is then eliminated from the competition. The first team to win three battles will win the competition and be crowned 2014 Sprite Slam Dunk champions.

i heard on 1st take this morning how Stephen A. Smith keeps saying that the dunk contest is disrespectful and all this stuff and i'm thinking in my head "wow, he must not have seen the list of dunkers this year". this is the first contest ive been exited for in a while. then he says how lebron needs to be in it. Paul George is 5x the dunker lebron is. lebron wishes he could do this

still waiting for 2k to put that in the dunk contest... but i don't mind gimmicks as long as they arn't Blake Griffin gimmicks like the car. how in the world can you top the car dunk? its not fair to other contestants.

I'm glad Ben is in it, giving us some much deserved ASW representation after his Rising Stars snub and DMC's ASG snub. First representative since Gerald Wallace in 2002. I just hope he performs well and doesn't pull out some of these.

I'm interested to see what Wall and Lillard come up with too.

I preferred Griffin jumping over the Kia to George's Tron dunk, since you couldn't even see what he really did as far as the actual dunk was concerned until the showed the replay. The gimmicks need to give way to actual creative stuff with the ball, things we haven't seen before and new combinations/twists on previous dunks.

The contest also needs to do away with fan voting in the final round, or at least open it up after the finalists have completed their dunks, so that it actually makes sense to have a final round.

Having said that, it's a pretty good field and it's nice to see some star power in the contest. Whatever the outcome, we should hopefully see some entertaining dunks and get a cool highlight reel out of it.

The fan voting isn't going anywhere. Why would the NBA give up some money? For the enjoyment of fans ? Please.

I'm expecting some crazy attempts from John Wall.

It's wishful thinking on my part, which is why I also suggested at least opening up the voting after the final round is complete, rather than beforehand.

Well, Adam Silver sure is off to a flying start.

My knee-jerk reaction is that it's a terrible idea, one that fully deserves to be scorned and ripped apart. On the other hand, since the format of the contest has been messed up ever since they decided fan voting should decide the winner before the final round is even finished, perhaps it's time to try something a bit different.

I'd rather think of this as a brand new event, which will hopefully at least be an entertaining dunking exhibition, even if the overall concept isn't to my liking.

They completely ruin the dunk contest with this unnecessary idiotism, they invite Joe "Hey I actually get to be a part of the All-star weekend without deserving it" Johnson in the 3-point shootout.

I hope Joe Johnson gets booed like he never did before, especially on sunday. GO NEW ORLEANS

Also, in this new system, people like LeBron won't ever compete because of that superstar ego.

LeBron's afraid to choke in the dunk contest. After all he can't team up with two other participants in the contest in order to win like he did just to finally win a ring.

So uhh does that make the champions defend the Dunk Contest championship title next year? That sounds terrible.

I guess technically speaking, the East or West team will defend their crown next year, likely with different competitors representing them...if the format is retained, of course.

I don't care if the dunk is simple or not, I'm hoping for less gimmicks this year. Superman, over the car, choir, sticker, soccer kick lob, all dumb.
