Bynum and picks for Luol Deng

As a Cavs fan I love this trade. All the talk was of a Bynum for Gasol trade so you knew it was probably going in a different direction. From a Bull's fans perspective, I can't imagine being too excited about this deal even if it's better long term.

In addition to Bynum, the Bulls will receive the Kings’ 2014 first-round pick (top-12 protected), the Blazers’ 2015 and 2016 second-round picks, and the right to swap 2015 first-round picks with the Cavaliers (if Cleveland’s falls between 15-30).

Didn't lose too much on the picks. the 2014 is protected, plus the other 2 are 2nd rounders which are usually gambles anyways.

PLus Cleveland came up since Deng is probably a better long-term prospect at this point than Pau, the 3 is a position of need for them (not the 4/5), and they didnt have to give up waiters.

The 3 is definitely our biggest weakness (No more watching Alonzo Gee or Earl Clark starting) but we could still use a better option in the post. Still I prefer Deng over Gasol simply for the age difference.

The cavs are 3 games out of the playoffs in the terrible east so our playoff hopes just improved 100%.

Seriously? That's the best that the Bulls could get for Deng? Cap relief that they would've received anyway if they let Deng walk and picks that are either protected, not in the lottery or in the second round?

The Knicks may be the most dysfunctional team in the league from top to bottom, but the Bulls' front office is certainly up there.

It's amazing the Bulls had the team they had looking at their front office, who I'm guessing now hope that Mirotic will compensate the losses of Deng and Boozer (99% will be amnestied).

Rose can come back and even if he returns to producing about 21-6 a night, it will be hard to win with less and less around him. Noah, Gibson, Mirotic, Butler; and Hinrich, Dunleavy, Snell? Augustin might leave if he gets a good offer, which he will, at least more then the Bulls would pay.

First wrong move was not picking up Malcolm Thomas and Goudelock.

And the best move for the lowest scoring team in the NBA was to trade their leading scorer. I guess the front office wants Jabari Parker.

More playing time for Tony Snell. (Y)

Weren't the Cavs desperate to make a move by yesterday? So they did and this is what we get.

They will probably end up re-signing Luol Deng to a ludicrous contract.

Keeping Deng isn't that bad for a team with a win now mentality. If they can't upgrade through draft or trade, which is both pretty hard in their position, I'd keep Deng.

they don't have many good options at the 3. think they'll start dunleavy there?

I'm guessing Dunleavy will start over Snell, but the latter certainly now has an opportunity for more minutes.

What would be the Bulls cap space be after Carlos Boozer getting amnestied?

Less than you'd think. Rose, Noah, and Gibson alone are about 40M. Then you've got Dunleavy, Butler, Snell, and Teague, plus the salaries of all their 2014 picks (they've got a few), and possibly Mirotic. Could be looking at 5M cap space, probably less. That's after using the amnesty on Booz. If I'm the Bulls, I'm shopping Gibson and the role players. Gibson is too expensive for what he does.

Thanks for the info. Indeed, Gibson is a bit overpriced especially for a 6th man big. 4 years -38 million correct? He has a couple of god games this year though, but it's hard seeing him being a core guy.

I'm not sure whether this was a tank move, or was it a "trade before he leaves" type of thing. Because Luol did deny an extension of 3 years for 30 million.

I agree, it seems as if the Bulls traded Deng to get something in return.
But my post was related to what I would do if I were the Cavs. I'd keep Deng.

Ohhhhh. Then the real question is the Luol thinks the the Cavs can actually contend. Pretty sure Cavs can retain him if they can satisfy his needs.

To be fair, deng is an UFA. There is the risk of deng walking after this season. the bulls were not in favorable negotiation position once deng turned down the 3yr 30 million extension

I will give kudos to management for making this shrewd move. Resigning deng at market value would have locked them in as a wanna be contender and destroy what little financial flexibility they had

I don't think any bulls fan is per say happy about the trade. At least we can take away that the management did identify this cite had its run and its time to move on. Mirotic or die next season

I disagree with air_gordon only because we never agree on anything and it will stay that way.

I still dislike how the Bulls management handled the entire situation. The management lowballed just before the trade, denting their relationship further. No way Deng was gonna take it especially given previous failed negotiations. Now the news is out, we can all hate Deng for how he only cares about money.

Oh, I agree about trading Deng rather than losing him for nothing, I'm fine with that and it's what they should've done. Having said that, if cap relief is ultimately what they were after, they could've got that by just letting him walk. I guess I'm disappointed that they couldn't get more for him, at least in the way of picks that were higher and unprotected.

Beside the fact that Deng is an injury prone player, It's probably because teams know that he will be a FA this coming off season so rather than trade for him they'll just wait for the off-season... the Carmelo Anthony trade made them be aware of that

True, I suppose I'm assuming there was definitely a better offer out there, which may not have been the case. Anyway, what's done is done. I wish they could've got a little more for him (even if it was just an unprotected lottery pick) but the writing was on the wall and they had to move on, so it is what it is.

Reinsdorf is a genius. he sends the guy no one likes, Gar, to do the dirty work then sends the more media savvy Paxson to talk at the press conference.

With the Bynum situation unfolding and that deadline to waive that salary coming up, Bulls management probably creamed in their pants when the opportunity to avoid the luxury tax arose.

of course Deng is saying he wanted to stay a Bull for his career. let's wait and see what contract he signs in the off season
