NBA to expand short-sleeve audition

Hoping in part to push along sales of NBA jerseys, more teams will wear uniforms with sleeves next season.

An NBA source told ESPN.com that as many as five teams will wear the short-sleeve jerseys as an alternate jersey for as much as 12 games during the season.

"We are interested in doing more short-sleeve jerseys when it makes sense," said Patrik Nilsson, president of adidas North America.

Nilsson said Wednesday that adidas is motivated to get more fans wearing jerseys while also innovating the game jersey for the players. The company pays roughly $35 million a year to be the official apparel provider of the league through the 2016-17 season.

Still looks out of place to me.

What does "when it makes sense" look like?

Yeah, that's an awkward turn of phrase. He probably means "if the demand is there" or "if they prove to be successful", something along those lines.

I stopped wearing jerseys as I got older. But I think I will wear sleeved jerseys casually depending on design.

Worth a try, I'd say. Cool move by the league.

Then next comes the sponsors like football kits. It may look weird at first but we will cope with it as time goes by.

But, that's one of the most awesome things about Basketball. Will be very sad if the current jerseys go extinct.

lame. they think that it helps jersey sales because people are more willing to buy cheaper tshirt type jerseys. i don't understand why they just can't keep selling the tshirt versions of normal jerseys. is this a gimmick/cash grab by adidas?

Looks like nothing more than a t-shirt. Probably cheaper to make.

Gaps between the shoulder and the sleeve as the picture above looks good. It minimizes the t-shirt look of the jersey because it looks like they have worn the jersey and the t-shirt. But still I'm opposed to the t-shirt idea. Players have worn them for years why change it.

i stand by it looks like shit. they may be doing it to increase jersey sales but i would never buy one. i own a lot of jerseys and tend to get one of the newest celtic (rookie or FA) jerseys each season. if the celtics went to only short sleeve in the future that would stop lol. i dont see this really catching on to that extent though

Ain't no in-game jersey but something like these will work imo. And this is the shirt some Celtics fan girl from our forum bought.

iirc you don't have an Antoine Walker jersey. :shake:
How about your Rick Fox jersey, had you burned it since he joined the Lakers? Ray Allen's?
Still have your Tim Duncan jersey?...oh...:proud:

As noted in this article that Stress Fracture posted in Suns logos thread:

The Suns’ alternate jersey with sleeves will be part of a new venture to create a jersey that is more wearable in every-day life than a traditional tank-top jersey. ESPN.com reported that as many as five teams will be wearing alternate jerseys with sleeves next season.

Suns point guard Kendall Marshall retweeted a SLAM magazine online report about teams introducing sleeved jerseys and added his own comment: “pleeease NOT us.”

Golden State was the first team to wear sleeved jerseys in February but the jerseys, worn in three games, were unpopular for how tight they were and how they were a solid top paired with pinstriped shorts. The Suns’ sleeved jerseys have received better reviews internally.

I guess one team wearing them for three games isn't exactly a fair sample size to determine their quality or popularity, but at the same time it's hardly encouraging either.

that's adidas trying to be "cool" and "modern" and trying something different. nike did this way better with the designs on the back of the Duke & Texas jerseys. i also really liked their design on the back of the 2012 redeem team jerseys. it's different, but not done just for the sake of being different.
