Called it. Surprised Jeremy Lin didn't place higher.

Yeah, that is weird, it must be backlash. I mean the guy was legitimately far better this season than he was last season. I actually didn't mind a Lin pick because he went from maybe 11th guy on a roster to a guy who might be a legit starter.

It's not the worst list, probably really the best list of MIP votes since I've been bitching and you all have been rolling your eyes. Bynum is the other one I'd kick out. But he's a Laker so of course he'd show up.

On a personal rambling note, Monroe is the one who surprised me the most of his actual play, because I thought Ilyasova, Pekovic and Dragic were solid and they just stepped up to another level with youth. But seeing Monroe actually understand you can use your height to score on other players was my surprise after his rookie year where he didn't seem to think this was allowed in the rules.

I think it's a fair selection. He took on a bigger role, playing more minutes without a huge drop in efficiency. You could certainly argue for the other players on that list, but I think he's deserving enough. I agree with benji though, that's a good list of candidates who deserve some appreciation by way of getting a few votes.

It was amusing to watch the ESPN pre-game show in which they made a big deal about him increasing from 10PPG to 15PPG (in 31 MPG, as opposed to 19, leaving him at approximately the same PPM), and then Magic said he should definitely win MIP because he's leading the league in 3PM (not even a stat that actually measures something worth measuring), and none of the other MIP candidates were leading the league in anything.

I'd have given it to Ilyasova or Monroe, but at least it didn't go to Lin for his 2 weeks of shine. By that means, Lester Hudson should have won by going from 1.6 ppg and 1.5 apg to 10.9 ppg and 2.3 apg with his 16 games.

Hudson had already established himself by doing 16/5/3.5 in his rookie season and was going into this season at a career 13.5/4/5.5. In any case he doesn't qualify.

Lin played half the season and nearly 1000 minutes.

And he was actually good on the court.

If this award were up to me then this year i'd have given it to Nikola Pekovic. His numbers legitimately improved, i didn't even know his name last year, and some of his stats this year are surprisingly elite.

1. He improved his PER from 11.2 to 21.4.
2. He improved his point scoring rate (+4 per minute)
3. He improved his rebounding rate (+2 per minute)
4. He improved his FG% from 51.7 to 56.4 (epic!)
5. He improved his WinShares from 0.6 to 4.5... or if you prefer, his WinShare/48 from .035 to .170.
6. His blocking rate was lower. And there were miniscule decreases to FT% and AST, but his turnover rate actually decreased which is amazing (from 3.7 to's per 36 to 2.5)
6. He now gets 5.2 offensive rebounds per 36 minutes (epic!!!)
7. His ORTG is 117 and his DRTG is 107.
8. He became a reliable starter that was consistenly productive on 27 minutes per game.
9. But perhaps most importantly, he managed to decrease his foul rate from 7.3 per 36 minutes to 2.8, which in my mind is a true indicator of actual improvement in his game.

Pekovic certainly had a strong claim, it was good to see him end up third in the voting. Again, even if they didn't win and Anderson isn't necessarily the best choice, it's nice to see those players get some recognition regardless.
