The Warriors traded swingman Stephen Jackson to the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday for small forward Richard Jefferson and a conditional first-round draft pick this year.

"There is no doubt in our mind that our roster has improved by leaps and bounds," [Warriors GM] Riley said Thursday. "We had to change this thing. We've changed the Warriors organization in terms of the way we do business and our roster. I don't want to sit in front of the media like I did last year and say I like our team and I don't like our record."
...
The Warriors also acquired the rights to T.J. Ford, who announced his retirement earlier this week following the latest scare to his surgically repaired spine. Riley said Ford "basically made the deal work for both sides."

Warriors also made a side deal for a pick:
In addition Thursday, the Warriors acquired a second-round pick for this June's draft from the Atlanta Hawks for cash considerations in an earlier deal.

Why of why did the Warriors get Jefferson?

He should've been an amnesty candidate for Spurs. I like the deal better for Spurs since I figure Jackson will be more amenable to fitting in with Spurs than anybody else.

I have a feeling Riley just wanted to get rid of Stephen Jackson. I like this for the Spurs though. Jackson already has Greg's trust I believe. Jackson should feel comfortable playing with the Spurs from the get go.

It was already noted back with the Bogut trade that it had been done early so Golden State had time to re-trade Jackson.

So in the end it was Monta and Udoh for Bogut and Jefferson? They needed to break up that backcourt and Udoh's ceiling is probably like Jordan Hill (based on the 0 times I've seen him play) but now they're stuck with a team full of injury prone veterans that probably would just miss the playoffs on the off chance they had a clean slate of health. Curry's always injured. Bogut's always injured. Now they're locked in to all these contracts for years. Classic Warriors.

Props to San Antonio for getting a player who's a better fit and has less money owed to him.

Much better deal for the Spurs than the Warriors, especially since teams can't amnesty players acquired via trade. As Lamrock said, Jackson is a better fit in San Antonio with a better deal. Jefferson is far from useless, but I doubt he'll have much of an impact on the Warriors' fortunes one way or another.
