Nash Won't Request Trade From Suns
Feb 18, 2012 9:26 AM EST
Steve Nash does not intend to ask the Suns to trade him before the March 15 deadline.
“I’m not oblivious to [the chance of] playing on a contender,” Nash said. “But at the same time, especially in the position I’m in right now, I feel a sense of loyalty to my team. To go and ask for a trade, it’s not like I’m going to say, ‘Trade me to...’”
Nash, 37, will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.
“Everyone wants to be on a contender,” Nash said. “It’s cyclical. Right now we’re not contending. We’re just trying to fight for an eighth spot.
“I just feel like I owe it to my teammates [to stay]. I like these guys a lot. I want to fight for them and see how good we can be. If we take our lumps, we take our lumps."
http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/21 ... _From_SunsI really appreciate his mindset,
some players should think about that.
like the one below - lol

I like his typical Canadian mindset. But I really hope to see him winning a ring like Kidd did with the Mavericks.

Shame bout that, he deserves to be on a contender

i think the real shame is all these players bailing on the teams that have paid them and taken care of them through thier careers. in todays nba everyone is crying and wants out right away. i think what nash is saying is the right thing, only wish more people were like him

Classy stuff from Nash, no surprise there. I wouldn't be completely shocked if he looks to go elsewhere after the season but given his loyalty, I could also just as easily see him remaining in Phoenix to finish out his career. At the very least, I'd expect him to finish this year in Phoenix while giving it his all, then evaluating his options in the offseason. Given that he is getting up there in age I suppose there's a chance he could hang it up, but I think he could easily continue to play at a pretty high level into his 40s, as John Stockton did.

Yup. It's hard to believe the guy's 38 and he's still a legitimate All Star caliber PG. Hope to see him last long but it'd be nice to see him winning a ring while he's still in the spotlight like Kidd did with the Mavericks last season.

It helps that his game isn't built on athleticism. Like Stockton in his later years, he's in great shape and has still got just enough quickness to keep up, with his shooting and passing skills along with his basketball smarts taking care of the rest.

The question remains wouldn't it be better for the Suns to trade him if they get a decent offer and which team could have serious interests in him?
Mon Feb 20, 2012 7:25 pm
Not really. Whether they keep him or trade him, they're not going to be an elite team anytime soon. If they were to trade him, it'd be for expiring contracts and draft picks, assets that would help in a rebuilding phase. The teams that would be interested in his services and that he'd likely want to go to if he were traded, which is to say teams that can seriously contend for a championship, don't necessarily have those assets to offer in return.

Only way for Phoenix to lose Nash is if they low balled him in his contract negotiations this off season.

Phoenix should tank this season and trade Nash while his value is still high. That's the only way they're going to move forward. This mediocrity won't get the team anywhere in the future.

could you go out to lose when you stepped on the court? i know i sure as hell cant. i dont care what i gain from losing my pride would force me to do what i can to win that damn game

Besides, they've already got the tenth worst record in the league and aren't likely to fare much better by the end of the year. Nash's contract comes off the books at the end of the year anyway and unless they're sending him to a contender - which means they might not get good picks or expiring contracts that they'd want in return - trading him potentially sends a bad message to players considering signing there in the future. If Nash wants to remain a Sun, then I say keep him. I'd rather have him around to help ease into the next era for the team.

Nash clearly doesn't want to stay with the Suns, but his personality is too genuine to demand a trade.
Fri Feb 24, 2012 7:07 pm
Is that really clear? I don't think any of us can truly speak for what's going on in Nash's head but it seems to me if he really wanted out, he'd handle the situation professionalism, make his request behind closed doors and the Suns would look to accommodate him.

Why would a legendary 38-year old PG who has never won a championship want to stay with a team surrounded by old washed up scrubs (except Gortat). It's amazing that Nash leads the league in assists despite a joke of a roster.

Loyalty to the organisation, being at peace with what he's accomplished. That's not to say he isn't open to leaving and will likely explore the possibility at the end of the season, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him remain in Phoenix.
As far as trading him, once again it comes down to someone having the assets that Phoenix wants, which would be expiring contracts and/or draft picks. Contenders don't necessarily have those assets, so putting together a mutually beneficial deal is easier said than done.

The same could be said about Dirk last season. Chandler comes and the rest his history.
I think John Stockton also has the same scenario as Nash, being loyal to the organization and all.

The same could not be said. The Mavs have had eleven straight 50 win seasons. Phoenix is more like a LeBron away from contending.

Still, he could have just walk away from the Mavs when he became a FA in 2010.

No, he won't.
Dirk was probably testing his market value but Dallas was ready to give him max money anyway and fortunately for the Mavs Dirk agreed to a lower salary.
