Chase Budinger, Jeremy Evans, Paul George & Derrick Williams- All first-time participants
- One Round, Three Dunks
- Only Fan Voting
- Twitter Voting
http://www.nba.com/2012/allstar/2012/02 ... index.htmlA new format will be implemented for the 2012 competition. The contest will consist of only one round and each competitor will execute three dunks. Fan voting will open after all four players have completed their first dunk. Previously, the Sprite Slam Dunk contest consisted of two rounds, with the first round scored by a panel of judges which determined two finalists.
Chase BudingerBudinger is more of a balls out, straight for the rim, game dunker. Some nice dunks in the HS dunk contest, but I don't think he is really athletic enough to be very impressive after last year. He'll probably be creative though.

Too tall to make some of his dunks look impressive. He'll need to be gimmicky to get past the Lin and Rubio factors.

He'll be getting lobs and setups from Rubio probably, so look for that. My pick to win.

Seriously, I've never even heard of those guys.

Gonna be a pretty turrible dunk contest. May as well include Shaq and Charles in this too.
Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:32 am
At least Nate Robinson isn't in it.
They're all young athletic kids, hopefully they bring something creative to the contest.
My pick would also be Derrick Williams.

ah fuck....
The 2012 Sprite Slam Dunk in Orlando will feature a series of firsts, including four first-time participants, a new single-round format in which the winner will be chosen solely by fan vote, and the introduction of fan voting via Twitter.

I'll probably watch it just for Budinger and agree with Jao that Williams is going to bag this one.

Shump involves Lin somehow and wins in a landslide even if he sucks.
Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:59 am
Where's Jeremy Evans? Shit.
Out of those, I'm going with George, though Lamrock made a good point as it's only fan vote.

I don't like Williams hang time, but he finishes well. He gets up high and quick but comes down fast. Chase is very coordinated and has good hang time but just doesn't get high enough to really stand out. Shumpert and George have great verticals and hang time. I think it will be between those two as far as impressive dunks go.
I don't like the format at all. First dunk basically wins the contest since that is when voting starts. Voting will go to the most popular player, not the best dunker. Paul George or Derrick Williams will win because of it.
Here is a better format- The winner has a dunk off with last years winner.

Just stupid....
Can we just go with the old format?? It was the best!!Why in the world they shorten the most impressive event of the weekend???
3 rounds,a lots of contestants and dunks and NO friggin fan voting!! And don't tell me that players have ran out of creativity!!
As for the participants, Williams and George sure got the hops, don't know about the other two though...

They shortened the three-point shootout?

No, they are only using one team for the shooting stars event.

One way to destroy any goodwill the dunk contest has created in the last few years

I suppose this can't be any worse than 2010's though.

Hell no! I hope it won't!!

I'm not too keen on the changes to the format, it's certainly not what I was hoping to see. It'll still mean a total of 12 dunks in the contest though and eliminates the confusion of judges voting in one round and fans voting in the next. Of course, depending on when they open the voting, later attempts could still become irrelevant. It also streamlines the contest somewhat. I think the format could work and in some ways is probably better than what they've been doing the past few years, but I definitely don't love it.
As for the field, I think it's OK. Budinger is a surprise though, if they were going to pick a white guy from the Rockets to be in the dunk contest I would've expected them to go with rookie Chandler Parsons. The field lacks "star power" but there's still potential for some cool dunks. So long as there's a few impressive dunks, it'll at least be worth watching the highlights. It's a rare year for the dunk contest that there's absolutely nothing fun to see, though not every contest is fun to sit through live.
Anyway, here's hoping for some entertaining stuff.

Blake wins the popularity contest last year in the final round, this year SHump will win because of Lin

Kinda impossible to top '10. But seems as if they try hard. -.-

I think Budinger is pretty athletic:
I also think this is a good choice of players, because this won't be won by popularity alone, they will need to deliver. There's no need to have star power in the Slam Dunk Contest.

Underwhelming names and it's been awhile since this event was taken seriously. Frigging Bron, Kobe, Wade, and Griffin shoud participate.
Fri Feb 17, 2012 7:31 pm
I miss Chris Birdman on this list...

Disappointed at the lineup. NBA all-star weekend should be all about stars and not a single marquee name here. To a casual fan, who the hell are these guys?
I can only imagine but I would pay to watch this:
- LeBron
- Blake Griffin
- Westbrook
- Derrick Rose

Kobe? You're kidding, right? He's a good decade past being able to compete in a dunk contest.
