Looking for an NBA Team to follow, any suggestions?

Wed Dec 21, 2011 2:47 pm

So basically I find myself looking for an NBA team to follow this season. I have never really gone for a team, but just followed the NBA for the love of basketball. I have over 20 jerseys of different players, but don't really have a team to passionately follow. So if anyone can put forward an argument for their team for me to follow, and reasons why etc, then I will consider, as I'd like to have a team to follow this season. Go ahead and convince me. :)

Bulls, of course.

Right now, the Clippers are probably a team to bandwagon. A couple of All-Stars, potential for a lot of highlight plays with Paul, Griffin and Jordan on the same team and probably the most promising outlook for the future in franchise history. History offers the cynical suggestion that it's all going to fall apart somehow but nevertheless if I were looking for a team to start taking an interest in, they're an appealing choice at the moment.

The problem is with teams to bandwagon, is exactly like what is shown with Miami last season. If you jumped on the bandwagon, you'd be known as a Miami Heat dick rider or something like that. While I doubt that would happen with the clippers, i'd be concerned if their owner would actually spend some money to make a solid team. You are right that they have a solid future, and I wouldn't be hesitant to wear a clippers jersey down the street, either chris paul or blake griffin, and they should make the playoffs this season. I don't really want to go for the big name teams such as the Lakers, Heat etc, as they have enough fans, and the lakers are just about finished, they've got a couple more years left for a run at the title, and Miami won't be able to fix their issue at center, cause of salary cap issues. Clippers sound like an appealing option.

Everyone has to jump on the bandwagon at some point and that usually happens when teams are winning or are on the way up, since that's when they're most appealing to new fans and the most fun to watch. It's when you claim to have always been a fan or jump off the bandwagon when times get a little tough that you're being obnoxious and a fair weather fan. If someone does that then they're bringing scorn upon themselves from their fellow fanatics but apart from that, it doesn't matter what anyone else says. You're looking for a team to follow, latch on to the one that appeals to you the most. (Y)

Weren't you the guy who had a T-Mac avatar before? I had always thought you were a Rockets fan. :?

Of course, if you were to ask me which team to follow, I'd say Rockets without even thinking about it. After Yao's retirement there probably isn't much appeal to the team anymore for a casual fan, but if you want to see a good run-and-gun offense consisting of young players, the Rockets are a prime example of that. It's fun to see Scola drop 30 this game, then Kevin Martin drop 30 next game, Kyle Lowry drop a double-double this game, and the game after they put all that together... They just have guys who can light it up at any given time which makes them fun to watch. But let's not talk about their defense...

I have a preference towards small market teams, with Denver being my favourite. I also like the Clippers because they sucked for so many years despite being a team in a big market. I started "bandwagoning" with them about February/March 2011 because I was staying in Anaheim and I didn't want to support the Lakers.

Whether they're a great team or a bad team, each one has something to offer. It all depends on whether you like one guy carrying a team, the big three mentality or a team with a bunch of solid players that work well together.

I was a tracy mcgrady fan, but I didn't actually follow the Houston Rockets. I tended to follow players, not teams back then.

Well so far, I'm thinking either the Clippers, Heat, or Thunder at the moment. Clippers cause they have the potential for a lot of Highlight plays, and have a bright future, Heat cause I like the idea of following a team with a mission to prove the haters wrong, and the Thunder cause I want Kevin Durant to win an NBA title.

So for now, it's out of those 3. I don't really want to go for the Knicks, Lakers, or Spurs.

I can understand that, I used to do it a bit as well. One of the reasons I like the Spurs is because Tim Duncan is one of my all-time favourite players.

I think if you really want to see Durant win a championship, that would be the best bet out of the three... but if you hate the Lakers, the Clippers would be a good choice too ;)

Portland.

They have young rising talent as well as old veterans. This year they are finally going to take advantage of their athletes and push the ball up and run every possession. It is going to be exciting. Our fans keep the home atmosphere energetic as well. It will be an entertaining team for sure.

With Raymond Felton being pro-efficient at pushing the ball up, we have very good shooters and athletes running up the floor and not to mention the L-Train, best known for running the floor like a gazelle getting to use his assets even more.

I think Blazers are a solid team. Definitely fun to root for.

Seems you've got your top three, whichever of those teams you find the most appealing would be the way to go.

Woah guys, have you forgotten about the defending champs

Other than that though go with young teams with potential. The Clippers, Thunder, and even Warriors would be teams I reccomend.

Don't worry, I still don't have a favourite team. I guess it's hard since it's not like supporting your home city/state's team.

I tend to like teams that build through draft and like them then I don't like them once the team changes direction. Look at say Heat with young Wade, Odom & Butler. I loved that team. Then they traded for Shaq & their team's playing style changed, so I didn't like them anymore. Same with mid 90's Lakers, fun team to watch. Then they sign young Shaq, trade Ced Ceballos & they are no longer enjoyable to watch (except for Eddie of course). I liked Knicks with Lee & the other young guys, but then they ditched all them to get Amar'e & Melo, so they suck now.

I've just come to the realisation that I'll never have a favourite team  Coaches, front offices & players change too much.

But if I had to give you a suggestion of who to follow, pick a young team with a good young player that you like who will be with the team for forseeable future:

- LA Clippers: Blake Griffin (too late, bandwagon has passed)
- OKC: Kevin Durant & Russell Westbrook
- Washington: John Wall

Alternatively be more savvy & pick teams with likeable pieces:

- Denver: Nice young guys like Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Wilson Chandler (once he resigns) plus likeable vet in Nene & super likeable rookie Kenneth Faried
- Minnesota: Love, rookies Derrick Williams & Ricky Rubio plus everybody loves Darko

Or you could be patriotic:

- Milwaukee: They've got Andrew Bogut, the one armed Aussie. Although you'll pray they send Brandon Jennings away to oblivion

Or you could use choose a team based on who you used in dynasty/association modes like I have in the past
