Report: Rose agrees to extension with Bulls

Postby Chino on Wed Dec 21, 2011 1:26 pm

CHICAGO (AP) -- The Chicago Tribune is reporting that reigning MVP Derrick Rose has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Chicago Bulls worth approximately $94 million.

The Tribune cited anonymous sources in its report, which also said the new deal will start in the 2012-13 season, when Rose is eligible to make about $16 million.
Bulls spokesman Tim Hallam said he was unaware of the agreement. Rose's agent B.J. Armstrong did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
The extension is hardly a surprise given all Rose has accomplished. The Chicago product went from Rookie of the Year to All-Star to MVP in his first three seasons, becoming the youngest player to win that award .About the only thing he doesn't have is a championship ring, and that's something he hopes to change in his fourth season.
The Bulls came close last season, winning a league-high 62 games and advancing all the way to the Eastern Conference finals before losing to the Miami Heat.
Now, they're looking for more.

Rose has repeatedly pointed the finger at himself for the Bulls coming up short against the Heat in the playoffs. He worked on his inside game in the offseason after expanding his shooting range in previous years, but it's hard to imagine him accomplishing much more than he did last season.
Rose delivered one of the best seasons by a point guard. He also joined Michael Jordan as the only Bulls players to win the MVP award.
The South Side product established himself as one of the league's best players, averaging 25 points and 7.7 assists while leading Chicago to its best season since the championship era with Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

For Rose, the contract extension is just another milestone in a rapid rise from the city's rough Englewood neighborhood to a starring role with his hometown team.
He helped Simeon Career Academy become the first Chicago Public League team to win back-to-back state championships, then led Memphis to the NCAA championship game before the Bulls drafted him with the No. 1 pick in 2008 after defying long odds to win the lottery.

No surprises there, he's previously indicated a keenness to remain a Bull. Glad to hear that it's all but official. (Y)

A bit weird seeing news of a superstar player receiving an extension from their current team considering what those jerks like Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul did, and in the case of Dwight Howard - currently doing.

I guess the big difference is: Rose was drafted to a team that was already big market.

The REAL surprise was Kevin Durant signing an extenion last season. (Y)

In all fairness, Rose and Durant presently find themselves in better situations being on young teams with a promising amount of talent, who have already had respectable success. There are plenty of factors that encourage them to stay and with Rose there's a hometown connection as well. Still, it certainly is refreshing.

That is good news for Bulls fans, as they have a good chance of picking up a few championships over the next few years if they can keep their core of Rose, Deng, Noah, and Hamilton that they added. If Boozer and Korver play like they can, then the Bulls pretty much have the Eastern Conference sewn up. Miami would have to play some good basketball to be able to beat them.

I definitely think they can hang with Miami with their current lineup. Despite losing four straight in the ECF last season, the series was a bit closer than it appeared and the Bulls had some leads late in games, but a lack of offensive firepower let them slip away. That's what I believe it comes down to for them, they're a strong defensive team under Thibbs and they're able to stifle the other team's attack fairly well, but last year they didn't have enough of a scoring punch and options beyond Rose to finish the job. Defense wins championships, so long as you can still put the ball in the hoop more often than your opponent. Hamilton will hopefully help out in that regard this year.

Also, the new CBA gave him his own rule, meaning that he can demand even more money from the Bulls than was previously allowed. Hard to turn away from that.

In any case, it's brilliant news. Hopefully, it will take the team to an even higher echelon of success.

The Bulls are definitely up and coming with Rose. The Heat and Bulls will be the favorites in East for at least couple years.

I wanted to see the Celtics versus Bulls series last season. Should be a good measurement where the Bulls stand in East if it ever comes to that.

Dwight acting like a lil girl playing lousy against the Heat, having tantrums w/ Magic pulled him out in the trading block

Disagree. Most top young players always re-sign with the team that drafts them due to money, loyalty & restricted free agency. Lebron re-signed, Melo re-signed, Dwight did, Paul did, Durant did, Deron Williams did. They all do. It's only when they're further into their career & they're no closer to winning title & building their legacy (&/or brand) that they look elsewhere.

Melo specifically resigned for longer than anyone else in his class to be loyal to the Nuggets.

True, but then you've also got players like Shaq who look to sign on elsewhere very early in their careers, for one reason or another. Juwan Howard originally signed with the Heat that same offseason only a couple of years after Washington drafted him, but the contract was voided when the league ruled that the Heat's efforts to get him a huge deal while re-signing Alonzo Mourning for over $100 million for seven years weren't entirely on the level. That was admittedly many years and a couple of CBAs ago, though.
