The Pacers and Celtics have discussed the preliminary framework of a deal, but two sources said Indiana would need a third team to provide Boston with the talent it wants to do a deal. The Celtics are likely trying to gather the necessary pieces to make a bid for Ainge’s ultimate target: New Orleans point guard Chris Paul, sources said.

Boston could be trying to gather players to make a more attractive bid for Paul, sources said. New Orleans has shown no interest in a deal that would include Rondo and any combination of Celtics teammates.

All of the chatter about Boston's interest in Chris Paul is a moot point because the All-Star point guard will not sign a long-term contract extension with the Celtics, according to a person close to the situation.

Tyson Chandler was widely hailed by many observers as one of the biggest reasons that Dallas claimed its first championship in franchise history earlier this year.

Most notably, NBA Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki credited Chandler will helping to instill a defensive attitude with the Mavericks that was missing in previous seasons.

Despite those plaudits, Chandler told ESPN.com he is convinced that his time with the Mavericks is ending.

“I really think I’m going to be on a new team come training camp,” Chandler told ESPN.com in a telephone interview Wednesday night. “I’m really taking a hard look at all of my options, trying to see what best suits me.”

Chandler told ESPN.com that he’s disappointed by the club’s decision not to offer him a contract extension. His defensive play helped turn around a losing culture that had seen Dallas eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in three of the previous four seasons before he arrived.

Before playing in 74 regular-season games with the Mavericks last season, Chandler had missed 69 combined games in the previous two seasons. He averaged 10.1 points and 9.4 rebounds in 27.8 minutes during the regular season for Dallas last season and 8.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in 32.4 minutes in 21 playoff games.

If Dallas chooses not to make a concerted effort for him, Chandler likely would be among the most attractive free agents available.

Obviously, if the Mavericks offered Chandler maximum money this season, it would limit their chances to be a major player in next season’s rich free-agent sweepstakes. Among the players who would be available then include Chris Paul, Dwight Howard and Dallas-area native Deron Williams.

Wow. Chandler not re-signing? This for real? I wonder if he will consider the Heat at all. The Heat would be the perfect place for this dude. This guy takes only 5.5 shots a game but at the efficiency of Wilt Chamberlain, yea! Wilt! His defense rocks but he had more value in his offense last season. Without him on the floor, it was surprising the Mavericks offense suffered more than the defense. This guy probably was the best player that requires so little touch on offense. He can also set screen pretty well and will definitely help Brong and Wade.

They'd still be over the cap, but they could offer the MLE. They could do that even if they don't amnesty Miller though.

I don't think that's set in stone any more than his return, but the prospect of him remaining with the Mavs certainly looks a little bleak given his comments and disappointment in the lack of an offer.

A: He is threatening to leave the Mavericks because they won't offer the type of money the Heat have no ability to offer. He's re-signing there. This is all part of the free-agency dance.

Oden leaning toward re-signing with Blazers

Restricted free-agent center Greg Oden is leaning strongly toward re-signing with the Portland Trail Blazers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Oden would sign a one-year, $8.8 million qualifying offer with the Blazers and become an unrestricted free agent after this season. The No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft has played just 82 games over four seasons because of injuries. The Blazers made the qualifying offer in June to ensure Oden was a restricted free agent.

I think it's a good move for both sides. One last shot for the Blazers to see if Oden can make it through a whole season and be productive; when he has been healthy, he's shown flashes of being at least a really solid big man. Even as an unrestricted free agent, I think they'd stand a pretty good shot at keeping him after the season. For Oden, it's a no brainer and one last good shot at turning things around.

The Suns are looking to waive Vince Carter

The Suns and Carter amended the contract in June to delay the guaranteed-salary date in Carter's final contract year until after the lockout ended. Waiving Carter inside the first 72 hours after the league's schedule start of free agency Friday means that Phoenix would only have to pay $4 million to Carter and likely ensure that the Suns avoid luxury-tax territory this season even after trying to complete the re-signing of Grant Hill and moves with other potential free agents.

He could be another decent Chicago target. Can create his own shot, is respectable from outside and will likely not command a heap of money. Or he could be a pretty good final piece somewhere else. San Antonio will probably be interested.

As word came out earlier the San Antonio Spurs were interested in soon-to-be free agent Vince Carter, David Aldridge of TNT and Michael Lee of the Washington Post are now reporting that both free agent small forwards Caron Butler and Josh Howard will meet with the Spurs on Tuesday. Per Aldridge's twitter handle:

Though the Chicago Bulls are the favored team in the sweepstakes for Butler, he hasn't ruled out the chance of signing with any of the other candidates. On Saturday, a report revealed the Spurs were a strong suitor for Butler.

As said in previous reports regarding the available small forwards, the decisions to contact their agents is most likely hinging on the theory that San Antonio may be using the amnesty clause on forward Richard Jefferson or will be looking at a deal via the trade route.

Agreed. He was meant to be that player for the Magic though and that idea kind of fizzled, so I not completely sold on him in that role. Still worth the gamble for a team like the Bulls or Spurs though.

Looks like Brandon Roy won't be available and may even start. I think that might be a little too much optimism on the part of Nate McMillan but Roy can still go when his knees are feeling co-operative. That's the rub of course, they're in rough shape and it remains to be seen whether they could hold up...especially with the compressed 66 game schedule, with back-to-back-to-backs and stretches of five games in six nights for some teams.

There was probably more pressure on him when he was with the Magic. As good as Dwight Howard is, he doesn't quite have the offensive variety that Derrick Rose has. VC needed to be the second option, or first option when Howard was in foul trouble. If he was playing with the Bulls, he could be the third and a halfeth option, if Boozer and Deng are both healthy and playing well. In any case, I like him more than Rip Hamilton(who I don't really mind).

I'd probably take him over Rip as well. Rip may not even be available anyway, he seems a likely candidate for Detroit to use the amnesty clause on but they could just as easily opt for Charlie V.
