Rockets' Yao Ming has decided to retire from the NBA, league sources tell Y! Sports. He informed the league office within past 48 hours.

Thought this was coming. Shame to see his career end this way

Sad, injuries stopped him from reaching excellence. I would of rertired too, though if I was in his situation.

He only played 514 games (including playoffs), that's just sad. he had so much potential, I really think he shouldn't retire. I guess it looks like this season we lose two of the good (and for Shaq one of the greatest) centers in the leauge.

That.

Really sucks to see a premature end to a career like that, especially from a player who I think could've carried the Rockets to a championship sans injuries. Guess it's time to move on. :(

Was his foot injury that bad? All along, I really wanted to see this guy at his best. What a loss of talent. I feel that he never had a chance to play up to his true potential because of injuries all this time. Just 1 injury free season in his prime would have been a nice treat for us fans.

Perhaps he can play at the lesser league where competitive level isn't as high.

It's certainly not a surprise but a real shame he couldn't have ended his career on better terms, having spent most of the past few years out with injury. Maybe if he'd been able to rest and recover properly the first time he broke his foot things might have been different, but I suppose for someone with his frame, it might not have mattered either way once that initial injury occurred. Nevertheless I'd say he had a very respectable career despite all the injuries, if nothing else he proved Charles Barkley wrong.

what's still funny (and i think kenny mentioned this in the next show) that charles just had to kiss the donkey, but he wound up kissing the donkey on the ass which he didn't have to.

Really sad to hear, but I guess not unexpected. I have to admit I was a Yao doubter at the start of his career, but I saw the difference he made to the Rockets and I came around. Arguably the greatest player over 7'2

I think he meant greatest player over 7'3" (since Yao is listed at 7'4" in shoes)

Re: Yao Ming Retires

Sat Jul 09, 2011 6:19 pm

I was originally going to say 7'3, but I guess I forgot about Sabonis so I put 7'2 instead. Touche benji

Re: Yao Ming Retires

Sat Jul 09, 2011 6:31 pm

I couldn't resist because of Sabonis' expression.

Re: Yao Ming Retires

Sabonis was a pure joy to watch. Sabonis, Rik Smits type of players I think can be said that they were pure centers with quality. Today I have a feeling the teams prefer more athletic centers like Okafor and Chandler. Perhaps the game has evolved in time. But one thing for sure, I miss those days with legit big mans with great skills. Yao could have been one of those big mens.
