http://www.tout.com/m/9944woDamn, this was not exactly unexpected, but sad to see one of the greatest of all time retiring. He was definitely one of the most charismatic person in the league during the past 20 years, both on and off the court. He did/said some unusual stuff, which caused quite some people to dislike him, but also brought tons and tons of fans into the game, popularizing the league all over the world.
I guess thanks and goodbye Shaq. I see him continuing his career in some enterntainment field, hopefully that includes NBA in some way.

Bye Shaq.

That a shame....
I would love to have him in the Bulls for only one year, but if it is how it ends...
Shaq uploaded new vid asking the fans for a new nickname mins ago.

It's too bad he went out how he did, injured, old, slow, not exactly what I envisioned when I heard he signed with the Cs.
He does enough away from basketball to not need to, but I would love to see him coach or be an analyst for TNT with Chuck.

Long live Shaq !

One of the greatest big men to ever play the game. From his birth as an orlando magic, to his rise as a laker, to his final championship with the miami heat. Only to be slowed down by injuries and age, future hall of famer and one of the top 3 big men of all time.
Shaquille O'Neal, you will be missed, allstar and champion.

Top-10-greatest-Big-of-all-time.I'll-miss-him...

Top 5, bro, probably top 3.
I hope Shaq does some coaching or something to stay on the NBA scene. I'll miss his Shaqisms.

The best player of all time.

For me, sad day. One of the best (if not the best) center to ever play the game, hopefully he stays around the league (assistant coach, TNT with Charles, anything)

Agreed. While you can't take away the things that he achieved in his prime, it was kind of sad to see him bouncing from team to team and reduced to something of a bit player in his final years. Good on him for wanting to play on and accepting a smaller role, something that former stars of lesser stature seemingly could not, but it's a shame he couldn't have ended his career on a better note and on his own terms.
One of the all-time greats and most entertaining personalities we've seen. I haven't agreed with or liked everything that he's said, sometimes he's been downright childish, but he's been great for the game and a lot of fun. Best of luck to him in retirement, I too suspect we haven't seen the last of him in one way or another.

We will miss you SHAQ

One of the funnest players in the league this past decade. I'd say he's right up there with Hakeem, Kareem, Robinson, etc., in terms of being one of the all-time greats. It'd be real fun to see him as an analyst alongside Sir Charles. Long live Shaq!

I don't know that he's cut out to be an analyst. He's good for a one liner here and there but when he speaks at length he tends to mumble.
Thu Jun 02, 2011 1:09 pm
i would have liked him a lot more if he stayed with the magic

Not so fast, says Woj.
Goodbye will never come this way. There’s still a comeback left within him, still some late-season clandestine workouts with teams to show he can be useful in the playoffs.
A former front-office executive, former coach and former teammate of O’Neal’s privately agreed with the premise on Wednesday: Shaq will try to play again. There will be one more ill-conceived, clumsy comeback for him.
As one of his ex-coaches says, “If there’s a lockout, I can see him bored with whatever he’s doing, wanting the attention and trying to come back with a team later in the season.”
Guess you can never say never. He brings up some good points about his legacy and personality as well.

Goodbye Shaq

As far as centers, I put Shaq behind Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Hakeem and Moses Malone. Not Top 10, but definitely Top 20 greatest ever.

Looking at the 1999-2000 season, this has to be one of the best seasons a C has ever played. Definitely the best season a C has ever played since the 90ies (I hope I don't forget on an Olajuwon season, but I think Shaq's 99-00 season must have been the best).
When guys like Shaq retire, it makes you feel old. I mean, he's almost 40 now. I did not see him play in his Magic days, but he's one of the basketball players that determined the decade since I'm following the NBA.
I can't imagine him as a Analyst, but he could be interviewing guys before the game and make some jokes, have an appearance here & there.
Bye Shaq.
/edit: Oh, and how about having the third best PER over his career in the NBA despite his average career-ending years. Only Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal have managed to lead the league at least five times in a row in PER. -> top 10 material? I think so, maybe Benji's gonna kick me, but looking at the stats of his prime, Shaq got to be in the top 10.
Thu Jun 02, 2011 9:11 pm
I think Shaq should join Kenny, Chuck and EJ on TNT
Thu Jun 02, 2011 11:31 pm
Agreed with Jon.
Where will his jersey be retired?
