Making New Awards

Postby benji on Thu Apr 14, 2011 7:43 pm

Let's say you could create three new awards to give at the end of each season, what would you make?

I'll just go with a pair of fun ones and maybe one serious one.

Offensive Player of the Year - Why does this not exist?

Austin Croshere Award - Player who plays well in the playoffs, gets massive contract, and continues to play at the same level he was in all seasons prior save for that one playoff run.

Dana Barros Award - Player who comes out of nowhere, puts up stats that are way out of wack with their career, gets massive contract, and winds up playing the point for the Pistons at some point. Well, okay, that last part isn't needed, so copy the one from the Bibby Award. Minus the playoff part.

That's partly because of his former Dana Barros Award! (And the fact that most GM/Coaches prefer known crap to new players who might be good.)

The Trenton Hassell Award - player who's not really good but manages to have a long career because player is a good influence/presence in the locker room.

I think Kobe wins the 'Offensive' Player of the Year after what he said to that ref and the media jumping all over it.

You could tweak that to be one for a guy who stinks but coaches "trust" him so he plays gobs of minutes anyway.

Or maybe that's the Michael Curry Award. Hassell could at least hit open jumpers.

i guess it's more of a realistic Defensive player of the year award, except the catch is that defense is the only thing the player is great at. Hassell, Q Ross, Mbah a Moute, etc.

I know it's far from an original suggestion, but I like the idea of a Comeback Player of the Year Award. Grant Hill in 2005 and Amar'e Stoudemire in 2007 are two examples that spring immediately to mind.

Best Bench - self explanatory
Blake Griffin Award - most redunkulous (voted by fans)

oh, we're talking cynical dubious awards?

The Jerome James award - Most weight gained in Summer after winning Dana Barros award
The Greg Oden Award - Best performance by a player that eventually gets hurt (max. 25 games)
The Hedo Turkoglu/Chris Kaman/05-06 Mike James Award - Given to the worst player putting up all-star caliber raw stats.

The Kevin Garnett award: to the player who best displays skills in picking on players smaller than them.
The Jalen Rose award: to the player who talks big but doesn't back it up.
The Tim Duncan award: to the player who is the most mild mannered.

Best 3pt shooter award
The Bob Cousy award (top assists/best point guard)
Fatass of the year
chucker of the year
The wilt Chamberlain award (top bigman)
the mark madsen award (best hustle player)

Exuse my spelling and grammar, I am too lazy to correct them.

The former team (Walker-Rose-Pedja-Anderson-Fisher) would vaporize the latter team off the face of the earth. They have gobs of rings, the latter team has one ring combined. Anyone who doesn't have a ring is worthless especially compared to those who won rings.

Real basketball fans know this, anyone with a ring is better than anyone without one automatically.

Learn about the game already, maybe you could try watching it to start.

They should have an ALL-Improved 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Team. Having just one guy being honored as Improved is just wrong. There are so many deserving players it doesn't do them justice.

This. Eddy Curry and Kobe Bryant would win EVERY year.

I like this idea. It could probably get a couple of old guys back in the league (Iverson, Stackhouse, Penny come to mind.)

Who would want them? Did you see how Stackhouse played in the seven games for the Heat this year?

Rose could probably still win that award as an analyst. Remember his bold prediction - nay, complete assurance based on his "reputable sources" - that LeBron and Bosh were definitely headed to New York?

Can't help but take what Jalen says with a grain of salt because he's an absolute nutcase. I was hoping the ESPN documentary on the fab five would give me more of an understanding to why he's that way and possibly even like him, but I think he irritates me more after seeing that.

Anyway, back to the topic:

The Kevin Love Award: to the player who gets the best stat line on a team without a real coach.

He played seven minutes per game. Of course he didn't put up big stats. He had 12 points in 49 minutes. Not too bad.

Not too bad? He shot 25% from the floor! Over the last three seasons he's shot 38% with a PER of 9.7.

And this from a guy who was never that great to begin with.

He's 36, he's done. The only way he'd make it onto a team and play major minutes is if fifteen team planes went down. And he'd only win the comeback player award if there were no survivors who made it back.

The Token White Boy award. Should go to the white boy on the bench who gets no playing time for a team that goes deep in the playoffs. Could call it the Cheerleader award and be less discriminatory. Could also be the Jack Haley award.

Thug of the Year, for the player who commits the most crimes in a season.

EDIT: Also the worst starter of the year award. Derek Fisher comes to mind.

Jack Haley Award would be for the inexplicable terrible player the team is required to have to try and keep a headcase star in line.
