Pretty much that or if you want a guard you could add Gary Payton to the list. MJs in there as well, maybe Dennis Johnson, don't know about the guys in the 60ies and early 70ies though. Was Oscar Robertson a good defender?
Fri Feb 04, 2011 6:50 pm
shane battier & raja bell are also in the conversation

Scottie Pippen
How the hell did I manage to forget him -.-
Bowen was the dirtiest player ever , but he was a great defender, so my pick goes to him.
Fri Feb 04, 2011 7:33 pm
My picks are MJ, Payton, Wade, Bowen, and Bryant(when he was actually trying)
Fri Feb 04, 2011 9:16 pm
Without a doubt my man Scottie Pippen
Fri Feb 04, 2011 10:42 pm
The X, was about to post those videos. Pippen #1, no question.
Fri Feb 04, 2011 11:31 pm
Me too. I have to go with Pippen #1, Bowen a close #2.

Rajon Rondo? Well, he gambles a lot but he gets it done on defense. He's mostly an on-ball defender but can lockdown on the perimeter too. We're talking about candidates right? Rondo gets my vote. Rondo was voted 3rd in the 2010-2011 GM survey on defense on "Who is the best perimeter defender in the NBA?" and was 1st in "Who is the best on-ball defender in the NBA?" and was also 1st in "Which player best defends the passing lanes in the NBA?" as seen here:

Bowen is up there, because he was known as "the Kobe stopper". Although Kobe still scored his points.

Scottie Pippen's instincts were so great. So many guys try to gamble on plays and get burned, but there wasn't a play where Pippen was calculating his move defensively, THEN calculating the following move based on what happens. He just was always thinking one play ahead of defense.

Rajon Rondo?
In the league now , maybe so.
All-time? nowhere close
Sat Feb 05, 2011 7:29 am

that's what makes you a bad defender. when you miss, you pretty much leave your teammates to defend 5 on 4. that's why steals leaders aren't always necessarily the best defenders
and raja bell is the true "kobe stopper" not bowen

Sadly most haven't seen those guys. I do have Lakers, 76ers & Celtics' Dynasty boxsets, so will have to check out those 3. I know DJ was a great defender, just haven't seen as much of Coop & Bobby Jones.
From your earlier list I'd heard that Sidney Moncrief was a superb defender, even at only 6'3". Shame injuries shortened his career. I believe MJ said that was his toughest matchup (I'm aware that he later said Mitch Richmond).

Before they became teammates, Bobby Jones' battles with Dr. J were sick. Jones was a helluva defender, and a vital sixth man on that great 1982-83 Philly squad.
