Play of the Season?

Postby rayallen20 on Fri Jan 07, 2011 10:17 pm

What do you think is the play of the Season so far?

Me first. This was an EPIC finish. I couldn't stop watching this. When it all seemed impossible.....this happens.....

To be fair, he did qualify the question with "so far".

I love how the crowd erupted in Allen's 3. Ray Ray!

The achievement was great, but the play itself was plain a three pointer, so Tyreke's buzzerbeater or Amare's buzzerbeater gets my vote.

+1 to this. (Y) It might be a plain 3-pointer, but history was made with that shot.

I'd say Allen's record breaking three pointer was more a great moment than a great play. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive but a great moment doesn't necessarily have to involve a great play and a spectacular play isn't necessarily a significant moment in NBA history.

Dude, Ray Allen did a fast break three-pointer.
Reggie Miller always did a fast break three-pointer during his career.
Call it a coincidence or homage, it still gives me goosebumps when I watch Ray's record breaking vid.

Wut? homage? rofl ok... but

just based on play, nothing else(disregard achievement that came with that 3 pointer), fast break-wide open 3 pointer gives u a goosebumps. ok. didn't even mention reggie in this thread.

I mentioned Reggie not because of you but for my reason on why I think it's the 'play of the season (for now) with how Allen topped off Reggie's record by doing what Reggie does best with the three in his arsenal.

I'm sorry if you don't know the meaning of the words homage or coincidence which made my statement 'rofl' worthy to you or my entire previous post for that matter. I always seem to forget that not all people in forums are literate.

I get where you're coming from shadowgrin but to me, Allen's record breaking three was more a great moment than a great play. Not that it wasn't a good play and its similarity to what Reggie Miller used to do is part of the icing on the cake, but Allen pulling up and hitting a three pointer in the first quarter of a game isn't a remarkable play in and of itself; it's the historical significance that makes it special. Conversely, Evans' gamewinner doesn't have anywhere the same historical significance beyond being something for future highlight reels as a notable buzzer beater, but the play itself is more remarkable.

If you rate Allen's as the play of the season (so far or otherwise) that's cool though, again I see where you're coming from and it's not like there's a right or wrong answer here. I'd personally call it a great moment more than a great play as I feel that one doesn't rely on the other (though in some cases, a play may be both) and as far as the play itself is concerned, I'd rate a gamewinning buzzer beater from beyond half court as being more amazing/impressive and a rarer occurrence; not that the all-time record for threes made being broken is a regular occurrence of course, but simply hitting a pull-up three isn't an uncommon play.

That said, Allen's record breaking three, being the culmination of a career of impressive shooting from downtown, was the greater moment, a true highlight in its own right and it was really cool to watch it happen live last week.

Ray Allen's record breakage is more impressive to in terms of how fast he did it! 3 year shorter time frame than Reggie Miller! 4 years considering the amount of games he missed due to injuries! (314 fewer games)

I do get yours and Zanshadow's point, that being the shot itself alone is plain without the achievement attached to it.
Being a fan of both players and the way Ray did it, as I quoted above, it's hard for me to simply see it as a plain shot and it is my sole (homer) reason why I think it's the best play at least for now.

I think Ray will find himself #1 in top moments of 10-11, although I'm with shadowgrin on this one, I'd put it as the play of the season. It's the biggest record broken in years, all last have been Kobe and Shaq passing people on the all-time scoring list and Steve Blake having 14 assists in the first quarter.
