Microfracture surgery.
Can't be bothered to post an "official" link, but this isn't very good news.
EDIT: Trail Blazers' press release:
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden will undergo microfracture surgery on his left knee Friday and will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season, the Trail Blazers announced this evening.
Dr. Richard Steadman will perform the surgery with assistance from Trail Blazers orthopedic surgeon Dr. Don Roberts at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo.
Oden, 22, has been sidelined since fracturing his left patella in a Dec. 5, 2009, game vs. Houston. A recent MRI showed damaged cartilage to the surface of his femur, and his current injury is unrelated to the fractured left patella.
Oden previously underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee Sept. 13, 2007.
He holds career NBA averages of 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.43 blocked shots in 82 games over parts of two seasons from 2008-09.

I feel so bad for Oden. Another "what could have been if he was healthy" case for a good player. I know that his career is not over yet but face it, he will never be the player everyone expected him to be because he is so injury prone. Also, microfracture surgery haven't done anybody good except for Stoudemire and Kidd.

The rest of those guys who had microfracture surgery made an OK comeback, but they were never able to return to the player they once was.

Another jolt to the franchise. Roy's knees are a ticking bomb as well. Our best player Andre miller is old. Lamarcus aldridge is soft to the touch like a vaginal cream.

Atleast you guys have Batum?

What a fucking piece of shit.

Time for Portland to rebuild with both star players likely done forever.

He cant do much. yeah he plays D but almost all his points come from others making a snippy pass to him. He cant post up nor dribble really well

Well he is a phenomenal shooter and freak athlete with potential to burn... If he had ball handling skills, he would be an all-star. He's easily our best asset.

Isn't Oden like the second or third guy they've lost for the whole season due to injuries? I'm sure there was at least one other guy.
Sucks to think Oden isn't playing at all this season after losing him for most of the last one.
I'm wondering now if Oden will ever play. I really hope he does. I like the Blazers and if they were healthy, they would be title contenders. But no, Roy out for a couple weeks, (yes that was announced as well) Oden out the whole season, Miller aging, who's next?
Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:24 pm
Elliot Williams, Jeff Pendergraph, probably Brandon Roy for his career and now Olden. He will likely never play another game for Portland ever again.

I am not even sure how I would feel about taking part in athletics ever again if I was Oden. There has to be a breaking point mentally. At age 22 he has repeatedly needed serious surgeries to his knees. Not to mention the hip/back surgery in 6th grade? Which makes him limp the way he does now while walking. There is only so many times you can convince yourself that you current injury was a fluke and not a serious physical/genetic/simply being 1 foot too tall problem

If I'm Oden, I don't give up completely in the NBA but take at least a couple years off.
But then again, I'm not 7'0 and don't weigh upwards on 280 pounds. (My knees don't even carry half that weight...

)
RIP. Oden's promising career.

Meh. Some perennially downtrodden team (hopefully not Portland!) will likely offer Greg a big contract this Summer, citing his potential. Could see the Wolves grabbing him so that they can have their 1-in-100000000000000000000000000 chance of ever winning a title.
Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:38 pm
You're assuming too much when you assume teams are going to be able to offer anyone contracts next summer.
Did they find out if Roy has any cartilage in his knees or not yet?
Thu Nov 18, 2010 2:52 pm

not surprised

Deja-Vu. Was waiting this.

i saw a couple days ago on nba tv they said they examined roy's knee and said they wouldn't operate because there's no meniscus left to operate on. it's bone on bone now. ouch.

Actually, I had heard that but last I knew they were concerned he might not actually have any cartilage either. In like a minute of searching all I could find was they still didn't know since they aren't doing the surgery.
Guess Pritchard lucked out.

No surprise on this one but WTF!!!

His chances of making his career atleast at the All-Star level is done. I feel sooooo bad for him..

Chris Mannix of SI made some pretty good points about Oden today in his
column.
Most notably would be the fact that with the probability of a lock-out we'll probably miss out on a chunk of next season, giving Oden more time to rehab. Chances are a good team takes a shot on him, not a bad one. Mannix cites Miami (need of a center), Phoenix (great medical staff), and Oklahoma City (need of a center), all of which are good situations for Oden because he doesn't have to be "The Man" in those situations - just a guy who can do his job.
I think he'll be a serviceable NBA player at some point. Last year's numbers are probably his long-term ceiling, but on a contender that's very valuable.
If I were a GM and I had no center, I don't know what the negatives would be throwing a minimum deal at him. The positives far outweigh the negatives.
if you're reading this, that means YOU Joe Dumars. Give Arnie Kander the challenge of his career.

I think Portland would be smart to try and play on his emotions and cut a smaller deal with him. It'll be a killer if he pans out to be a decent big guy elsewhere. I mean they stuck with him, so they might as well use that as a negotiating tactic and say hey look, we stuck with you, help us out, take a smaller deal and see what we can manage to do, if you can bounce back we'll work out an extension worth a lot more money.
At least that's my mindset, big men with talent are hard to come by, even ones with weak knees.

Despite all the injuries and stuff, I doubt that you can call his life a bad life.

Portland won't give him the qualifying offer (~8mil for #1 picks?) so he's going to be an Unrestricted FA. there won't be any tactics. no hometown discount. etc.. whatever team that's willing to take the bigger risk (multi year contract) will end up signing him
there's not enough money in this world that would make me happy if i'm in a wheelchair by the age of 25
