Sean Marks: Going Home?

Postby Kenny on Sun Jul 18, 2010 3:06 pm

here

The Auckland-based ANBL franchise has two spots remaining on its roster for a guard and a big man and Clarke would love to see Sean Marks fill that void.

"He's New Zealand's best ever," Clarke said. "He's local. He's got the longest NBA career [of a New Zealander]. It'd be great for New Zealand fans to see him playing here. It's a chance for him to play with a lot of his good friends in his home town."

It'd be a great thing for the NBL, but I'd be lying if the headline "Marks 'greatest ever'" didn't make me smile... even knowing what context it was in.

He was pretty terrible outside of two seasons (sorry, X) but I'd like to see him back in the NBL. He'd instantly be a top 3 C in that league.

No insult taken, he's getting past it now. He only played a decent amount of games in 2 seasons, so we will never know. I'm just a bit miffed he didn't get a chance earlier in his career on a more uptempo team when he was a little quicker & more athletic. I said this to Sit many years ago that I wish Marks had of said no to being 12th man in NBA & played in ACB or some other of better European leagues, as he could've had a David Andersen-like career over there, considering that Andersen is such a little bitch with the body of a female anorexic who I could push around.

Marks is a great locker room guy, but I can't see him returning to New Zealand to play. I think he has an American wife & is now a dual New Zealand-American citizen, so I could see him living in US for a while longer & becoming an assistant coach.

To answer the question, I actually think Kirk Penney will go down as the best New Zealand basketballer ever (like a NZ or poor man's version of Andrew Gaze) . He can play & flat out shoot. He should've stayed in Europe though rather than destroying the chumps in the NBL every year.

Hence the rest of that sentence:

even knowing what context it was in.

It's a testament to Marks that he stuck in the NBA as a seldom used reserve when he could have chosen to be a bigger part of a team like David Andersen but he didn't because he thought it was worthwhile to ply his trade in the NBA. I guess David Andersen chose a career in Europe because he didn't want to be in Marks' shoes while Marks chose to do what he did because he didn't feel a need to do what Andersen did.

However, speaking of the NBL, I forgot that it still existed...

I'd say Andersen went to Europe because a) he wanted to play and b) he could get more money. I think Marks probably would've made more in the long run though because even signing minimum contracts every year, they increase as your years as a pro increase.
