NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks have reached an agreement in principle with free agent Amare Stoudemire.
The Knicks said Monday they intend to sign Stoudemire to a contract later this week when the free agent moratorium period ends. Stoudemire's agent, Happy Walters, said the deal is for the maximum allowed, which would be nearly $100 million over five years.

Wearing a blue Knicks hat, Stoudemire said he looked forward to rebuilding a franchise and bringing the Knicks back to the top -- maybe with a player such as LeBron James or Dwyane Wade with him.
"I feel great about being a pioneer and showing my leadership," he said at Madison Square Garden, where signs throughout the entrances showed the player pictured in a Knicks uniform and reading "Welcome, Amare Stoudemire."

The common assertion has been that Amar'e will be nothing without Nash, or at least nowhere near as impressive. I think that's giving him too little credit, he should get enough touches to score somewhere in the realm of 20-25 ppg, grab his eight or nine rebounds per game and basically put up similar numbers across the board though perhaps less efficiently. Where I believe he may falter is the ability to carry a team and combine individual success with team success, without a player like Nash helping to shoulder the load and pulling out all the stops in the clutch. If the Knicks get another big name then that may not be an issue, but despite his confidence I don't think they land LeBron or Wade.

Poor Lee. Amare slammed on him. He is coming to NY. Lee go another team!

NIce move for the Knicks. At least they didn't remain stable waiting for LeBron to decide,or they know that he won't sign with them or he wants another star player.Though i insist on him given a max contract as i said in the FA thread

Re-uniting with D'Antoni should be good for him. Like this for Amar'e. But I doubt this will bring either Lebron or Wade into NYC.

Nice signing by the Knicks. I don't think he's the kind of guy that will turn it around for them, but atleast they won't leave the free agency without a big name. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Lee now.

That's true, seems the Knicks weren't placing all their eggs in one basket after all.

Amare will put up amazing stats cuz there's no one else on the Knicks who can do anything... he'll score like 80% of their points.
Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:04 am
I disagree with you.He will score 100% of their points!
But i don;t have the 5000 to pay the penalty

Amare signing with NYK, that's a great move for himself since he wanted to be the MAN. It seems none of big FAs are going be there joining him, so it's going to be Amare's team at least for an year or so. If not, they can bring a big name via trade, but from what Amare's been saying, it seems like the NYK might wait for Melo and Parker.

Melo has been working out a contract extension. We'll probably know by December?
