Thunder acquire Daequan Cook, 18th overall pick from Miami

Thu Jun 24, 2010 10:06 am

The Miami Heat have agreed in principle to trade Daequan Cook and the 18th overall pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the No. 32 selection in the draft, sources told Yahoo! Sports.

“We are pleased to add Daequan Cook to the Thunder roster,” said Sam Presti, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager in a press release. “He will add depth and shooting to our backcourt.”

Great trade for the Thudner. They get the 18th pick in a good draft + a very good shooter who can help from the bench.

A good move on both sides. The Thunder don't desperately need Cook since they've got Sefolosha and Harden already, but it deepens their talent pool a little and if it doesn't pan out, they can forego offering Cook the qualifying offer at the end of next season. The Heat meanwhile trim a little more off their payroll as they try to maximise their cap space as they look to bring in a big name to play alongside Wade.

So now they have 3 first round picks (18, 21 and 26). Albeit rather high ones.

they could try to package all 3 and move up. not sure how high they could get though to make it worth it

They are trying to trade up to 10th with the 18th and 21st pick + Maynor, probably depending on who will be available.

Great. 18th pick for Cook who was 32nd overall. Besides, gives 1 million cap to work with. This is only the beginning for the Heat as we got Beasley to dump now.

That would be a good idea if they could trade the 18th and 21st picks for 10nth overall, at first i didn't like miami's side of the deal but then after reading Andrew's thread about the payroll it makes perfect since. A little bit more cap room available for the heat, hopefully the heat will do something worth while with their money, its nice to see the direction which i think is a good direction that the thunder are moving in.

if the heat work it right they could be instant favorites to win it all next year....or they could just miss everything

Yep sauru you're right, i'm hoping the heat get two dect stars and a bunch of young talent, young talent either in draft picks or signings. The heat is one of my favorite teams after cleveland, portland minnesota and chicago. And you're right, the heat could become very good.

The Heat now have just 2 players under contract, 3 with Jones (buy-out in progress). They have made all the right moves and I hope they can get Bosh or Amare next to Wade and maybe even Joe Johnson for a third piece.

But I think it's better for Beasley and the Heat if they trade him also. He needs the ball more to be effective, his talent is being wasted right now and with another superstar hopefully joining the team, it only gets worse for him.

Indeed, but seems like Riley says we're keeping him for now.

"We want to build around him."

Come on, Riley. :shake:
