Kia Motors gives fans chance to vote for NBA MVP Award

The National Basketball Association and Kia Motors America announced that, for the first time ever, fans will have the opportunity to help determine the winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player award presented by Kia Motors.

Through a dedicated Web page on NBA.com, fans can submit their votes for MVP, ranking their top five choices. The combined fan vote will count as one vote, with the remaining 124 votes coming from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Fans can cast their MVP votes from April 1 through 15 on NBA.com The 2009-10 NBA Most Valuable Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors will be announced following the conclusion of the 2009-10 NBA regular season.

I hate this idea because of the popularity factor; at lease 75% of NBA fans are player fans, not actual fans of the game. They're just going to go with their favorites and no one else.

You guys really need to stop pretending the fans will vote drastically different from the media. They're basically the same thing.

Are we really so far past the years of voting for Jermaine O'Neal for his better interviews or Hedo Turkoglu for well I'm not sure what.

Should just make all the awards fan votes, it means just as much. Actually more, since the reasons would be known.

Or do away with them. Since nobody cares about finding some objective measure and media awards shouldn't mean shit. OWS for Offensive Player of the Year, DWS for Defensive Player of the Year and WS for Player of the Year does not look like a horrible system if you take the time to actually look at the winners over the history of the NBA.

I think Kobe will get it. He seems to be the most popular. Playing in bigger market helps.

Perhaps, but I think at the same time there's still a stronger anti-Kobe sentiment amongst non-Laker fans, though as the years have gone by a "hatedom" for LeBron has certainly developed alongside the fandom.

Wade deserved it every each year in his career, so I hope the fans finally come to senses and do the right thing.

NovU I'm not sure D-Wade deserves it as much this season, considering LeBron's been the top scorer most of the season, Kevin Durant's 29-game streak of 25+ points, and Kobe's game winning shots overshadow his performance this season. I really think he was robbed of the award last year though.

When there was a vote, who should be MVP on NBA.com last year, I believe things were pretty tight between Lebron, Kobe and Wade with no clear leader. Wade even led at some point if not till the end. And even if Wade by some miracle gets the fans votes, sports writers and the other voters will give it to Lebron.

I think when voting for MVP you should consider these facts. Do you think if Kobe,Lebron,Wade or Durant is not playing on their team will their team win? Another one if your the MVP of your team you should make your teammates better. The last one for me, during the most crucial moments of the game you should be able to deliver the right play whether you score,pass or defend you should make it.

So the last part the four man surely qualified. But the second part, making your teammates better I think Kobe and Lebron are only qualified for that. The first part qualifies Wade, if Wade is not on the Miami that team will not be on the playoffs.

As much as I hate Lebron gets the MVP but he will get my vote.

You have a point there, but D-Wade's situation is comparable to Kevin Durant's, they only have like one or two decent supporting teammates, so they are the ones who are looked up to to score.

I actually buy that a guy like Chris Paul, Steve Nash or LeBron James can help improve teammates by padding their stats (look at Tyson Chandler!), but then the argument can be made that its just the superstar who is playing well...
