LeBron James told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that he has filed the necessary paperwork with the NBA to change his jersey number from 23 to 6 next season.
"I've done it," James said. "I already sent it in. I'm going to be number 6."
James' decision may prompt another round of speculation about the superstar's impending free-agency. The number on his jersey may be different but what about the city name?
If James were to sign with a team other than the Cavs this off-season, he would not need to submit an application to switch jersey numbers. The request James filed is only needed if he remains in Cleveland next season.

Wasn't this reported a couple of months back?

Damn, that sucks. He's got same number as me now. I got it for Bill Russell & personal connections, not Mr. Chump James

I think it was reported that he wanted to change his number but he hadn't officially filed the paper work for it.

Ah, that does sound familiar. Guess it wasn't a passing fancy.

If Michael Jordan deserves to have the number 23 all to himself in LeBron's mind I don't really understand why Bill Russell doesn't get the same respect for the number 6?
Wed Mar 03, 2010 7:43 pm
Adrian Wojnarowski's
take on the matter seems accurate. LeBron is probably somewhat sincere in his comments about Michael Jordan and number 23 but above all it makes for good PR. It's a nice, respectful thing to say about a great player who came before you but if LeBron truly felt it inappropriate for anyone to wear #23 in the NBA following Michael Jordan, he would've ditched the number upon entering the pros. Whether it's simply a fresh start, a feeling that #6 is lucky or now more significant to him, a distraction from the free agency talk or he just wants to move more merchandise, the MJ stuff is probably largely a spin. So be it. His performance on the court and which team's jersey will display that new #6 remain the bigger issues.

Good. Michael Jordan was going to remain the greatest #23 anyways. Any player who wears will be over shadowed. Period.

Of course, there's always Gary Grant.

Gary Grant > Tim Legler. Sure, Legler was a fine three point shooter, but Gary Grant put them in like he was making a chest pass to the rim, almost as if he were throwing an alley-oop that went awry and went in for three. On a more serious note, he somehow managed to have two 21 assist games while playing for the Clippers.

Gary Grant would be averaging 40ppg 20asg 15rpg as a point guard in today's league. nuf said.
Reminds me of high school days when all the kids wanted to wear #23.
