Eddie House, working on his
(college) 3pt shot for the contest in the New England weather.
Sat Jan 23, 2010 4:51 am
Cool.
Sat Jan 23, 2010 7:33 am
He really has a effortless and quick released 3 point shooting motion.
I really wanted to see Daequan Cook back in the contest. It's just disheartening to see him disappear like that this season. He's young and I thought he was going to have a solid career. Now it doesn't look too bright.

It'll be interesting to see who the participants are. I could see Channing Frye being the token big guy in the contest this year.

IMHO Cook was foolish for leaving Ohio State after just one season. He just wasn't ready to contribute at NBA level.

Cook's not very good, but how do you know he won't be in the contest?
Channing Frye is a likely participant, though I could see Bargnani making it too. I bet JJ Redick makes it since he's been having a pretty good year.

Just a guess on who might get in:
Eddie House
Dequan Cook
JJ Redick
Danilo Gallinari
Andrea Bargnani
Channing Frye
Aaron Brooks
Martell Webster
There might not be enough "big names" in there, but it seems like a pretty legit list.
Sat Jan 23, 2010 1:52 pm
I'd say at least a few of those players will get the invite. I'm guessing they'll go with a field of six though.
Sat Jan 23, 2010 6:45 pm
Cook, Gallinari, Frye, House, Redick and Brooks would be my list.
Would love to see Korver there, but I guess his 12 made threes this season won't make the cut. He's still shooting 57% though.
Sat Jan 23, 2010 6:52 pm
If Gallinari and Frye aren't in it it'll be quite disappointing.
I can't be assed, but what's the last time someone who lead the league in makes and attempts while shooting over 40% was ignored for the competition?
Also, regarding Frye, who's the last player who took 70 threes in his first four years, then exploded for a pace that'll probably give him 400+ attempts in one season. And he's shooting 43%.

It'd be extremely generous by a league to invite him for 3 pt contest, since he's been pushed out of rotation from a 0.500 team by Dorell Wright and JAMES JONES...
Besides, he's just been awful... I don't know what's been going on with him, but after a good season, I sure didn't expect him to be this bad. If you can't win a playing time from Wright and Jones, I don't think there will be many takers for him.

After all, Cooks the defending champ. He kind of has to be in there.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 3:19 am
I hope Brooks is in the contest. It will be really interesting to see Gallinari and Frye going against each other too.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 7:01 am
I watched Aaron Brooks win the college three-point shootout, he had a sweet contest-style stroke then, I don't know about now though.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 7:21 am
I'd like to see Redick go in it, and I'd still like to see Kapono get the nod as well. Not likely though...

Even as the defending champion, it'd be difficult to justify the invitation when he's shooting 28% from downtown.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:39 pm
Cook won the shootout last year despite getting a relatively low score didn't he? Correct me if I'm wrong but last year's contest was very poor. Everyone was shooting bricks but Cook stood out to win it.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:46 pm
There were a few decent scores, Cook scored 19 in the final round to win (yes, I did look that up) but overall it wasn't one of the better shooting displays in contest history.
Sun Jan 24, 2010 1:24 pm
19 is pretty good actually. My bad, I should have looked that up before anything else.

Still, as far as I recall it wasn't as exciting to watch as the other previous contests and all the front runners were bricking their shots.

Channing Frye is going to be the first Center since Sam Perkins in 97 in the 3pt contest

Sam Perkins was a fun player to watch back then with sleepy lazy looks in his eyes. If I remember correctly, he had over the shoulder shooting form at times.
Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:48 am
Figured he had a good chance of being selected. Right now, I'm picking him to underachieve a little and bow out in the first round though.

I remember them bringing back Quentin Richardson as a Knick back to the contest to defend his 2005 title that he won while he was with Phoenix at the time. He shot 34% from 3 (albeit at the end of the year, not sure what it was at the All-Star break back in 2006) and 35% FG which wasn't great either, though still better than how Daequan Cook has been shooting this season (31% from 3, 30% FG).
Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:22 pm
True, it certainly isn't unprecedented. Craig Hodges was even invited to compete after winning his third straight contest even though he wasn't on an NBA roster the year he was going for his fourth.
Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:30 am
Gallo has also been confirmed. Obviously my pick to win, being purely biased. Gallo does have a slow release though so seing him rush those shots would be kind of odd.
