Anybody remember Lonny Baxter?

Postby Leander on Wed Oct 21, 2009 9:03 am

Attended my city´s first euro-league game... WBC Wels vs. Besiktas Istanbul of Turkey. I think Besiktas have one Australian guy from the national team...and Lonny Baxter. We played well, had some dunks but got rejected big time and fell to the floor.

And missed several free throws. Luckily, we won, which is a big surprise. Austrian basketball teams are really bad.

Why did Baxter leave the NBA? He was not that good but still got some minutes.

Anyway, for us Austrians it was a pleasure to see a former NBA-player in action!!!

haha, Lonny didn't leave the NBA, he got caught firing a gun in downtown DC and he's still in jail or under supervision of some sort I believe.

No, he is not in jail. He has played in Europe over the last seasons.

Wikipedia reads:

During the 2004-05 season Baxter played some games for the Greek A1 League team Panathinaikos, before getting injured and agreeing with the club for his release. On August 8, 2006, Baxter signed with the Italian League team Montepaschi Siena. In 2008, he joined Panionios. In 2009, he moved to Beşiktaş Cola Turka.[1]

On August 16, 2006, Baxter was arrested in Washington, D.C., only a few blocks from the White House after firing a .40 caliber Glock handgun into the air. On August 23, 2006, Baxter was sentenced to 60 days in prison after pleading guilty to possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition charges. The judge in the case did not accept the plea bargain that had been arranged with the prosecution for a sentence of time served.

"There's no good reason for a person who's not working in law enforcement or presidential protection to be in possession of a loaded weapon within blocks of the White House, let alone to fire it into the air," Iscoe said.

Baxter was later charged with shipping four guns via FedEx in July 2006 without notifying them that the shipment contained firearms. Baxter pled guilty to this crime on July 19, 2007. [2] He has been sentenced to 60 days in jail, two years of supervised release and a $2,000 fine on August 31, 2007. [3]

well I learned something new today.

I seem to remember what he did being a lot more serious then what he actually did do. More power to him though, that guy was a beast in college with Chris Wilcox and Steve Blake and Juan Dixon.

lol, didn't realise Brad Newley was playing in Turkey. Guess he must be making more than he can here. Don't know why else you'd choose to leave Aus for Turkey?

I guess it was at request of the Rockets. NBL isn't held in very high esteem either so if he wants to have a chance at making it into the NBA, his best bet was to play in Europe.
