Draft 2003

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:04 am

Well all we have is some topics about Lebron and Darko, but none for the draft in it's entirety. Well I'm estatic that Toronto took Chris Bosh, hopefully he'll put on some weight. I was also amazed that the Heat took Dwayne Wade after all that talk about Macej Lampe (or however you spell it.) WHAT!!! LAC just took another big man in Chris Kaman. Somebody go shoot Donald Sterling, yeah I know he's not the GM, but he sucks a lot. Anyway, shar your thoughts, I will throughout the draft. No I will not spam, just share opinions.

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:11 am

I feel sorry for Kaman just because I feel sorry for anyone who has to spend their first three years on the Clippers.

Dwayne Wayde pick surprised me too, I mean, I wasn't sure when he was gonna go but I didn' think he was gonna go that soon.

Why Wont Chicago PICK!

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:14 am

FUCKING CLIPPERS!!! They already have enough big men! What do they need to waste Kaman for?

Shit...I was hoping NY would pick Kaman...now I bet TJ Ford is coming to town :(

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:15 am

Looks like Chicago is preparing for the worst with Jay Williams, unless I haven't heard the latest news?

As far as I know Williams still has the possibility of playing in the NBA more?

Looks like Bulls are gettin ready for him not coming back though,
I did not expect that really, Kirk Hinrich to the Bulls!

(I don't have ESPN so I'm watching it on the internet)

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:21 am

Well Milwaukee has taken TJ Ford, I believe both GP and Sammy Cassel are free agents, in which case this is a good pick. If Sammy is still under contract I don't like it as much because that's two point guards. Sammy isn't afraid to shoot so it might not be so bad if he is still under contrac/re-signs with the team. Poor Wez with no ESPN, I just have a Canadian sports channel The Score broadcasting ESPN's coverage though.

Better than last year where they picked Chris Wilcox and Melvin Ely in the lottery, when they already have Elton Brand...

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:29 am

wow! georgetown product sweetney went to ny!!!!!!go sweetney go!

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:34 am

:D Sweetney's a good pick...I can live with Sweetney......more of a rebounder and low post player then Weatherspoon...I just hope he gets playing time in NY's rotation.....and I hope to god we don't trade him for some old vet.....

Fri Jun 27, 2003 10:56 am

he's gonna be shipped with spree or spree is gonna be shipped with weatherspoon!

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:04 am

Dammit, The Score in Canada has just stopped broadcasting the draft in favour of WWE Smackdown. What a load of bullshit. Lousy wrestling, lousy no good Canadian programmers

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:11 am

yo man didn't u have Raptors TV?if u have it u can continue watching the rest of the draft..I hope Dallas or sumone would select Carl English (Canadian) in the first rd...Also i thought that Boston used up their 16th and 20th picks to get sum players like Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:16 am

here's a trade...

ESPN's Andy Katz: Boston will trade the rights to Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones to Memphis for the rights to Marcus Banks and the 27th pick.

lol....jones jumped from 50 to 20.....nbadraft.net had him at 50 :)

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:18 am

yeah that's a better trade...sheesh y pick a player from the second rd?

Fri Jun 27, 2003 11:23 am

No, I've never even heard about it before. I just have channels 2 through 57, so for us thats the basic stuff, then the second level with much and TNN and then another level with TBS, the score, comedy network and teletoon and whatnot.

I was very surprised that Jones was selected that high. I hope carl English is drafted in the first round. All that stuff about him is really interesting. Grew up in a town of 30 people. And is gonna be in the league. Wow.

Fri Jun 27, 2003 12:34 pm

the bulls picking hinrich makes me want to puke. i don't doubt that hinrich is a solid player. but picking him at the 7th spot?!!

the ony rational reason i can come up with for picking with this guy is this:
after wade was picked, paxson didn't think there was any other wing player worth going after in the draft. he figured he could find a better wing player via free agency, whereas he probably wouldn't find a better pg then hinrich via free agency.

crawford must be on a serious weight training program now...

jones looks like kobe after the series loss to the spurs! Image

no offense kobe fans!

trades: Celtics-Grizzlies
Celtics get: Marcus Banks (No. 13) and Kendrick Perkins (No. 27)
Grizzlies get: Troy Bell (No. 16) and Dahntay Jones (No. 20)
The fallout: Neither Banks at No. 13 or Bell at No. 16 seems to be logical. The Grizzlies needed a strong shooting guard and took a point; the Celtics needed a point and took a shooting guard. But the deal makes things a little easier to understand -- Banks can help run the offense in Boston (and the Celtics made no secret of the fact they wanted him in recent weeks). Perkins is a 60-10, 285-pounder who needs to get a little stronger to be a factor. Bell will be scoring option and Jones will add some defensive toughness in Memphis. "(Bell's) the guy we wanted all along," said new Celtics GM Danny Ainge. "We got two players that, from an athletic standpoint, are at the top of the list in the draft," said Memphis GM Jerry West.

Spurs-Suns
Suns get: Leandrinho Barbosa (No. 28)
Spurs get: Future No. 1 pick
The fallout: Brazilian Barbosa made little sense in San Antonio, which probably needed size over a point guard. As ESPN.com Insider Chad Ford notes, Barbosa has the potential to be a Gary Payton-like player someday. The Suns have a pair of international players in the draft.

lol just wipe that gooffy smile off

Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:50 pm

No  Carl English wasn't drafted at all...

Fri Jun 27, 2003 1:51 pm

lol yeah, what a trade huh?

What about Maciej Lampe being billed as a can't miss, top-5-8 prospect, lotery pick, and falling all the way to the Knicks at the 2nd round...? Many scouts were salivating over this guy and falled real bad... Hmm... Not a good sign for NY... (N)

Fri Jun 27, 2003 4:58 pm

Am I right in thinking there were no other draft day deals this year apart from the swapping of draft rights?

he slipped down due to a contract problem I read on realgm

that means GMs waited for the 2nd round to sign him only 1 year.

If the contract problems end, that could be a thrilling good pick for the Knicks.

Fri Jun 27, 2003 5:15 pm

Yes... Very disappointing...

I don't understand Chicago drafting Hinrich. Even with Williams out they have Crawford who has to pile on about 20 pounds to be considered a sg.
I can see why the Clips picked Kaman with Kandi leaving, but I doubt if he'll get much playing time. Hopefully they start either Ely or Wilcox alongside Brand.
If Lampe turns out to be the player some were predicting the Knicks will be looking good in a year or two. Sweetney gives them a young big body to grab all the boards.

I don't know if you are just repeating an article or what here.

First of all Banks is the guy Boston wanted all along, second both Boston picks were made by Jerry West, as were both Memphis picks were made by Danny Ainge. The trade being set and the factors making the selections.

I would have if I were Jerry West either asked Boston for more for the whole trade or traded down with someone else and selected Bell lower and then just taken Dahntey Jones with an acquired pick from trading down or just taken him at 27th overall, I believe Jones would have still been there at 27.

Or just take Bell at 13 (or Banks if you believe he's better) and Jones at 27.

The only player in the deal that was sure to go where he was drafted was Marcus Banks, the rest could have been taken at any point in the first round. No one was slobbering over Dahntey Jones or Troy Bell.

In conclusion: Boston mugged Memphis by getting the best player in the deal and landing a big man, Jerry West may think Troy Bell is great, he better be, because they could have done better with Banks, Reece or maybe even Ridnoir.

I am still thinking the trade over, but I think I'm fine with this as a Boston fan.
