McDyess going to Spurs

Postby Modifly on Thu Jul 09, 2009 12:56 pm

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The San Antonio Spurs landed free agent Antonio McDyess on Wednesday in another big offseason pickup for the aging NBA power that apparently isn't ready to fade away just yet.

McDyess, who despite being 34 was among the most sought players on the market this summer, reached a deal with the Spurs and is expected to sign later this week, team spokesman Cliff Puchalski said.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the Spurs had their full midlevel exception, worth about $5.85 million this season, to offer the 6-foot-9 forward. McDyess spent the last five seasons with Detroit, which also officially lost Rasheed Wallace on Wednesday when the veteran signed with Boston.

Between Jefferson and McDyess, the Spurs have added two former Olympians to their lineup after being ousted in the first round of the playoffs last season for the first time since 2000. Following that series, the Spurs candidly admitted to not packing the same firepower as Dallas.

McDyess averaged 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds in his 14th NBA season. His rebounding average last season was the third highest of his career.

The second overall pick in the 1995 draft, McDyess spent six seasons in Denver and also had stops in Phoenix and New York. He has never won an NBA title, going to Detroit the year after the Pistons won their last in 2004.

San Antonio also added a lesser-known big man Wednesday in Marcus Haislip, the former first-round pick who spent the past two years in Spain after fizzling in his first three NBA seasons. The 6-10 forward was picked 13th overall by Milwaukee in 2002 before going to Europe to work on his game.

The Spurs also brought back forward Malik Hairston, who played 15 games with the Spurs last season and spent much of the year in the NBA development league.

Seems like a solid move for the Spurs to me, McDyess almost averaged a double-double last season when he was given adequate minutes, I doubt he's going to get that much minutes with the Spurs, but he will really be a factor coming off the bench. I think he'll fit in really well with the Spurs too, the Spurs' system loves players like McDyess.

Seems a little redundant when they have Gooden and Blair...

Finally! It was either Sheed or him. Gooden's probably gonna walk. If not then Blair's gonna have less pressure to show up right away.

That's a good fit for McDyess. Their frontcourt definetely won't be a problem this season, although I'm not sure how Blair is going to get good playing time.

Very good signing. Great rebounding from McDyess last season, shot a decent percentage, didn't turn the ball over much. "The rich get richer".

Additions: Jefferson, McDyess, Blair (2nd Rd), McClinton (2nd Rd) & maybe a healthy Manu
Subtractions: Oberto, Bowen, K. Thomas

Outcome: 2010 NBA Champions

Oberto was expected to be coming back if he can't get a better contract/opportunity overseas. (Or elsewhere. Which seems unlikely.)

Spurs have definitely upgraded though.

They are probably getting Oberto back, and maybe Thomas. Champions? Not unless key members of LA, Boston and Cleveland all sustain injuries in the playoffs.

Can't really say I'm surprised with this at all. The Spurs just have a knack for luring veteran players and turning them into quality role players that can contribute a fair amount to a team's success while also allowing them to play for a contender.

It's almost unfair how well some teams are run in comparison to others.

After all these transactions I feel that Spurs might be even more dangerous then the Lakers next season.

You would care, if they played against Rockets next playoffs, wouldn't you?

At least, this Spurs team would have a real chance to beat Lakers.

Fine move, McDyess' best days are behind him but they don't need him to be an All-Star.

I had him in my Toronto Raptors 2005 dynasty and he was averaging 11 and 5 off the bench. Pretty much dunked everything within 4 feet of the rim.
