2011 NBA All Star Game Coming to Staples Center

Daily News Los Angeles

It will be the second All Star game played at Staples, which last hosted the game in 2004. But this time around, the entire LA Live complex (which had not been built in '04), is expected to host a variety of events surrounding All Star weekend.

This is pretty surprising because it was just half a decade ago when they last held the festivities in LA.

That's pretty much early for an announcement, I was thinking when would the All-Star Weekend be back on the East Coast.

Yes, that's what I am thinking too. The last time it was held on the East Coast was in Atlanta, the last All-Star game of Jordan as far as I can recall. Well, it's not yet official. I will only fully believe in that blog if official statements are announced.

Madison Square Garden is gunning for the 2012 All-Stars alongside Orlando. By that time, MSG is now fully renovated and as we all know, Orlando is having a new arena.

If it's money we're talking about here the League would rather pick NYC rather than Disneyland .

2010 - Dallas
2011 - NYC
2012 - Orlando
2013 - L.A.

Any particular explanation as to why the previous 8 All-Star weekend was held in the West?

Because the West teams have the most money to offer and host the ASG, while the East teams that have the money are in currently in some sort of trouble (like NYK sucking).

Not that homecourt advantage really matters in the All-Star game, but I'd rather they still alternated between East and West hosts so that stars from both conferences had an opportunity to be the "hometown hero" during the game.

Hometown hero means a lot to NBA players and it's pretty sad to see that players in smaller-market teams won't ever get to experience it. I mean -- there's big cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland that could really bring in a lot of league revenue. Hell, even TORONTO would be a huge venue for all-star weekend if it was done; those Canadians are some of the most die-hard fans among all those who follow the NBA.

Perhaps they will in the near future. When the Magic, Heat, Hornets and Timberwolves joined the league they all ended up hosting the All-Star Weekend within a span of about five or six years. Even though the Thunder do technically have an established lineage in the league, they're still kind of a "new" team and it could be a way for the NBA to express confidence in their market (since that was an issue before the relocation was made official).

I know the Hornets had it in 1991, but should that disqualify the Bobcats from hosting?

It shouldn't, but it currently looks like everywhere in the East is out of contention.
